A great introduction to Andy's work (& the Modern Love oeuvre in general), Unknown Exceptions essentially being a round-up of his earlier brace of 12"s for the label. Andy's productions are an astute hybrid of glacial techno minimalism & forboding, opaque dubstep - quite dark in places, but never unremittingly so, & shorn of the juvenile macho aggrandizing that taints much of the latter (for the casual listener, like myself, anyway). Though some of the tracks herein are already almost half a decade old, & though he's long since moved onto to new sonic pastures - with his s-l-o-w Passed Me By set, for instance - Unknown Exception still manages to sound a few savvy steps ahead of the game - magnificent work, basically!

4.0 out of 5 stars Andy Stott ‎– Unknown Exception 19 Oct. 2014

Format: Audio CD
UNKNOWN EXCEPTION brings together a number of tracks from Andy Stott's extensive 12" releases, and it's good to have them in one place for their rumbling-bass beauty. "Fear of Heights," for instance, is all about the dub techno throb, and "Bad Landing" continues that vibe, adding in a nice organ line to keep things fresh. The bass on "Handle With Care" is as thick as fog, while "Long Drive" goes in a more Detroit direction. "Massacre" gets back into dub techno, but the low and slow "See In Me" starts venturing in new paths. "Fine Metallic Dollar" has him working with metallic tones, but "Hostile" is a more straight-up techno track, and the twinkling tech-house of "Replace" brings an upbeat vibe. A fine collection of his works.
