Product Description

Evolution of Man is the fourth studio album from Example and includes the singles "Say Nothing" and "Close Enemies".

BBC Review

“Always gonna live like it’s my last day,” vows Elliot ‘Example’ Gleave repeatedly on Come Taste the Rainbow, the opening track of his fourth album.

And if this set is representative of said lifestyle, we must conclude that our hero will spend most of his final hours regretfully reflecting on his excessive drink and drug habits and settling scores against ex-partners. All to a banging stadium-rave-rock-grime-house-synth-techno-metal-pop sing-along soundtrack. What a way to go.

You’d imagine Gleave would be a little more upbeat considering last year’s Playing in the Shadows peaked at number one and spawned back-to-back chart-topping singles. But Perfect Replacement and Close Enemies are bitter ripostes to exes, while One Way Mirror makes the startling accusation, “You were frosty to me like I was Nixon”.

Yet ultimately, to misquote Shakespeare in Example’s trademark not-quite-poetic manner, you might think the lad doth protest too much. Such ‘dark’ lyrical tropes have served him well in the past, and even the blokey-but-sensitive shtick of his lovably clunky, WTF rhymes are part of a well-honed musical formula.

But credit where it’s due – he provides something for everyone. Different elements to pull out for umpteen different remixes? Tick. Bits the girls can sing and the blokes can shout along to? Tick. Brooding rap section to keep it ‘real’? Tick.

A few beefy rock riffs? Skream and Benga-assisted grimey techno squawks? Icy synth stabs and trancey beats for the ravers? Tick, tick, tick, and presumably, boom as the crowd goes wild. All that’s missing, strangely but mercifully, is a bit of grotesque Auto-Tune. With it, he’d fill up his 2012 pop bingo card with ease.

Yet underneath it all, songs like Say Nothing, Queen of Your Dreams and the title track are curiously reminiscent not of his hip hop roots or vintage dance music, but soaring 80s soft rock, albeit spattered with a gob full of glottal stops. As such, how can it fail?

“I need to make a fresh start,” he frets on Snakeskin. Nonsense. You’re doing just fine, and you know it.

--Johnny Sharp

If you like Example's Hip-Hop music i wouldn't recommend this as I found a distinct lack of Hip-Hop and much more club and dance styled music.
after playing in the shadows his music became much more mainstream and less underground hip hop, of course it depends what you like, I wouldn't tell people not to buy it if you like this style of music but don't expect the same old Example we heard on previous albums

I am a massive Example fan, I have seen him live about 5 times now and I didn't think he was going to be able to out do Playing with the Shadows, but he well and truly has!

This album is fantastic, I loved it from start to finish - lot more use of guitar, which works really well.

Highlights for me include Perfect Replacement, Close Enemies, Are You Sitting Comfortably, We'll Be Coming Back and Whisper.

Excellent album, possible of 2012 - highly recommended!

This is so much better than his last two albums, 'Won't Go Quietly' (got boring after a while) and 'Playing In The Shadows' (a massive improvement but still not perfect). This one has a much more grown up sound and his voice, the lyrics, the production, the guitars and everything else all work well together on every song.

Top favourites are: 'Come Taste The Rainbow' (what an opener!), 'Close Enemies' (best single he's released so far), 'Perfect Replacement' (just epic), 'One Way Mirror', 'Snakeskin' (great guitar sound and very uplifting) and 'Blood From A Stone' (menacing and best played as loud as possible).

A fantastic album from one of the few genuinely talented artists in the charts these days. Can't wait to see what he does next.

LOVE. This is what love is. Enjoy all of Example's albums with this one being my new 'play on a loop' favourite. Mixture of dance dance dance and stand and toe tap..something for everyone who has ears. Makes me love Elliot's monkey face even more!

I love this album, yet another amazing album by Example!!

I had this on pre-order but when my copy arrived the case was all cracked and broken, I opened a return case the same day (about 16:00) and had my new copy the very next day!! Returned the broken one using the collect plus which was really easy too.

This work is different from the previous release. I did not know what to think at my first listen. Second listen was the consideration listen. Third listen, brilliant. Amazing diversity of sound. Needs to be released here in the USA.

Example has done it again. Every album he releases is different from the last but he keeps the tunes coming. Evolution of man has got a lot more guitars in it compared to playing in the shadows and the songs are slightly less designed for the dancefloor however this album is a must buy if you liked his previous work. Best songs have gotta be:
-Say nothing
-Perfect replacement
-Evolution of man
-Daydreamer(with Flux Pavilion)
-All my lows
You wont regret purchasing this album!

After Buying this from Amazon just to boost my Cd collection I was amazed with the Cd. I only bought it because I could remember the Perfect Replacement song been good (and the fact that the Cd is dead cheap) :-)
Every, and I mean EVERY song on this Cd is worth a listen, Im suprised that all 13 songs havnt been in the charts.

I also bought the Playing The Shadows Cd, and that one is ok but its not a patch on this one
