A female news reporter receives a brutal snuff film in the mail. She recognizes the highway and building on the tape so she does what every normal person would do: gather up some friends and goes to investigate it for herself. Road trip! Once at the abandoned industrial site the group decides it'd be best if they break up. Good thinking! And it only takes a few minutes for the killer to start killing them. The first few kills were awesome and creepy, but it slows down quite a bit by the time we get to the Final Girl. SHIRYO NO WANA was a gory tribute to the works of horror greats, David Cronenberg, Lucio Fulci, and especially Dario Argento. The film sent shock waves rippling through the Japanese film industry and the fan scene as well, and was rechristened with the more exploitative title, EVIL DEAD TRAP for its international distribution (this film has nothing to do with Sam Raimi's cult trilogy). The film generated several sequels, and proved that the Japanese film industry could produce superior terror flicks of their own. Soon, horror franchises were born like the GUINEA PIG, RING and ORGAN series, which solidified Japan's presence in the world market. EVIL DEAD TRAP is a mean-spirited conglomeration of giallo and parasite paranoia. Stylistically, the film draws heavily from Dario Argento (and in the last act, David Cronenberg at his nastiest). There are also the occasional nods to Fulci (such as the eyeball violence).

The film also treads the same ground as the giallo, with some notable exceptions. The biggest one is the complete removal of the police procedural angle. Most giallos have heavy reliance of the police force or an investigator to put the pieces of the puzzle together.

Nami Tsuchiya(Miyuki Ono)is the host of 'Late,Late Night', a television show that encourages its audience to send in controversial videos that will be shown on air. Nami recieves one such tape in the post but is shocked to discover that it shows the brutal murder of a woman. Despite warnings from collegues, Nami sets off in search of a story in the company of four of her work collegues. They follow the route shown on the 'snuff' video. The trail leads to an abandoned military base, where Nami and company soon find themselves in terrible danger from an unknown assailant who likes to play with his victims before they are killed. Will anybody make it out alive.
Hideo Nakata's 'Ringu' is widely acknowledged as the film that put Asian horror back on the map, not only kick starting a revival in the Asian horror film, but breathing new life into the horror genre throughout the world. However, this film and Japanese Zombie film 'Junk' were made a few years previous to 'Ringu' and both showed important developments in the Asian horror film.
Evil Dead Trap is a very different beast to Ringu and the other supernatural shockrs that came in its wake. It has the look and the feel of an Italian horror, with its fog shrouded scenes interspersed with very gory set pieces and the obligatory synth score. It even points a maggot infested finger in the direction of Lucio Fulci. However, it is so much more than that. Not only does it reference past masters such as Argento, and also use some standard horror cliches it looks forward to subsequent successful franchises such as Saw and its sequels.
Evil Dead Trap is really a film in three acts.

Mixed reviews so I'll add another one for gorehounds and Asian film enthusiasts its crap simple as that or like others who've watched it I'm desensitized it really does drag and went the violence kicks its poorly done and very basic I expected a darker version of videodrome but it soon panned out to a very dull slasher esqe film with a very dubious and out of place last 15 mins its OK for a first watch but I for one won't be repeating it

the movie is pretty entertaining i thought. i cant say anything about the british version in terms of quality of transfer or extras. but its missing some violence. so go with the american dvd from synapse (code 0 with an audio commentary) or the dutch version from japan shock.

Outstanding! Blood by the bucket-load! Featuring a superb pounding soundtrack which will be disorientating if you are a Fulci-Fan. Highly recommended.

This movie was very good, despite the fact that it was made in 1988. It has a hint of Alien with a bit of Susparia and Videodrome. Excellent.
Eye-ball bit was excellent, a bit foolish when they split up, but is good none the less. This rocked, get time to buy it or rent it right now.
Everything was done well, gore was good, deaths were good. Gets a bit random at the last 15 minutes, but it still amazing.
A MUST SEE!
