Good strong characters with a nice way if putting across a very moral message but with interesting characters so you don't feel 'lectured'. Makes you want to be a better person yourself.

If you told me Mr Huff was 15 years old I would believe it. I could not finish it as reading it made my teeth ache.

***I received the eBook free as a review copy from the author in exchange for an honest review***

I’m still under the impression that this series has a lot of potential, but once again I don’t think it met it quite yet.

This book while still focused around Owen, spent a lot of time doing character as well as world development elsewhere. New characters were introduced left right and centre, and I’d only just got a feel for Owen and his friends so it didn’t work for me.

Huff’s writing has always been filled with long and detailed descriptions, this book was no exception, and although it made sure you knew exactly what was going on and where, it made me feel more detached than it has previously and I felt a lot more like a bystander to the story than living it.

Something that I’d consider an impressive feat, was how even with these descriptions he was able to weave a lesson into the story. It’s subtle but the way it comes into play in the plot also makes it powerful. Owen has to make some important choices in this book that can shape a lot more than just his life at that moment, so to teach the importance of all decisions and their outcomes whether they affect only that day or the rest of their lives and who they become is a great thing.

"One lesson you have yet to learn, Owen, is that sometimes it's okay to take time to enjoy what's important, and to see what makes up the wonderful world in which you live."
Very nice, fast-paced, thrilling and mesmerizing YA fiction, including superb fantasy and sci-fi.
This 2nd book of the Everville series lived up to our expectations and even surpassed them. I was really glad to read the Keeper's or the author's wise psychological insights at the end of the book. There, the Keeper spoke to Owen about the aim of suffering, the cost of achievement or victory, good versus evil across different times (future and past) and civilizations with their respective metamorphoses etc. In other words, some most important things in life in this world of our humankind.
The style of the narrative is perfected, adorable and digestible.
By all means, you will enjoy this read, regardless of your age!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Action!
Reviewed in the United States on 27 January 2014
Fortunate was I to be able to download a free copy of the book during this special promotion! As soon as it was registered in my Kindle, I set to reading -- thinking I would read awhile and then put it down until I had a few spare minutes to pick it up again... WRONG!

I began reading and didn't stop until I'd devoured the entire volume! (I'm still licking my fingers!) Dishes lie unwashed in the sink, the dustcloth sits on its shelf still in the broomcloset and the laundry (while loaded into the washer) awaits soap and button-pushing to start it while here I remain -- on my third cup of coffee -- still digesting all that I read...

In "The City of Worms", all of the characters we came to know in the first volume now show their true colors and we are amazed that we could have been that wrong about them all this time! Good and Evil change places as we are left with our senses spinning. Always challenging and never boring, they whisk themselves from reality to reality easier than we mere mortals go from room to room. This all has the effect of keeping the reader engaged and excited -- so wanting to know what lies 'round the next twist of the plot -- that I fear, like me, others will not be able to glance away until all of the plot has been played out in its entirety.

Other reviewers have voiced confusion over the many changes in levels and lands of the plot. I, however, felt no such disorientation and feel that each shift was well identified -- more than sufficiently to ready my mind for the action therein. (Perhaps I am just naturally inclined toward dualism -- and "more"-ism?)

The "Everville" series has everything one looks for in fantasy fiction: Wonderous settings; fantastic, yet believable, characters with whom one feels certain empathy; magic galore and more than enough action to satisfy even the most action-hungry pallet

I recommend it and loved it. Need I say more? I think not...

4.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative and Magical
Reviewed in the United States on 20 September 2013
The second installment in the Everville saga, " The City of Worms" is as mesmerizing and imaginative as Roy Huff's first book, The First Pillar." In this sequel Anika and Owen's friend Dante lies in a coma in the earthly realm, his fate linked to magical artifacts that have to be destroyed, while in Everville the traitorous Oldrik and his three accomplices have escaped their captors to join forces with the evil darkness that lurks in the Other In Between. With them go Fron secrets that could make Them more powerful than anyone could imagine. But this is only the start of an adventure that brings a clash of armies as the dark horde seeks power, and a summons to Owen to help unravel a secret at the Second Pillar that could mean life or death for the realms. Will Dante recover? Will the Keeper, Owen Sage and his friends be able to save both dimensions from evil's onslaught? The answers to these questions and more lie at the heart of a novel that brings heightened tension and anticipation as the characters battle new threats.

As well as encountering familiar creatures in this story, Roy Huff brings to life new ones who are just as original and fascinating as the short, thick, hairless Fron and the furry headed marmooks. The Ubaloo are twelve inch, muscular warriors who will fight alongside a Giant army lead by the brave Bardok, and General Varrick and his Frons face a new enemy, the dark winged Fwalyn their teeth and claws eager to shred flesh.

In this novel the characters' personalities evolve as they face new challenges. Owen Sage is not only smart and brave, but also shows humility and wisdom in his decisions. Anika gravitates between apprehension and depression while Dante's hospitalized, and shows little compassion or thought for Zee's feelings when she plans a party for the recovered patient. A confused Cleophas suffering from bouts of memory loss is determined to fight the evil invading the earthly realm even after he courageously hands over his leadership to Avery. In Everville the fortitude and determination of the Fron, the Keeper, and two of the repentant traitors-Elmer and Calvin -are unforgettable as are their nemeses; the arrogant, conniving, abusive Oldrik, the contemptible, proud Jacob, and the power-hungry turncoat Mallory.

Well-written, the plot steadily moves from one conflict to the next as it explores values like friendship, self-sacrifice, and commitment amidst the chaos and violence that besets the realms where good and evil coexist. I enjoyed this novel as much as the first, and look forward to reading about further exploits

3.0 out of 5 stars Written for the YA audience, but with enough depth for adults.

Everville: The City of Worms by Roy Huff is the second in the Everville Series. It really does not stand on its own, so read the books in order.

I really missed Owen Sage's first person narrative in this sequel. This is because, even though the story involves Owen, there is a lot happening without him in the other worlds, especially in Everville and in the City of Worms. There is s quest for the source that maintains the balance between the worlds (whoever owns it will have great power), battles with Giants, Ubaloo, Fron, and other creatures, and clues to find and figure out. As in the first book, the theme is the struggle between good and evil, and the corruption of power. Written for the YA audience, there is enough depth as a light fantasy for adults. Entertaining.
