A poor season for the blue side of Merseyside, as the formerly mighty 'Toffees' battled relegation. After being rooted to the foot of the table before Christmas, Howard Kendall's men seemed to have turned the corner with some great wins and stylish displays. However, with two games left, they were in the last relegation position - realistically needing four points to ensure safety. The first match was against champions-elect Arsenal, and they were hammered 4-0. To survive they had to do better than rivals Bolton, who were away at Chelsea - while Coventry stood between Premiership football in 1998/99 or Nationwide Division One. As it transpired, a nerve-racking 1-1 draw was enough for Howard Kendall's men, as Bolton lost 2-0.
