Everton Encyclopedia, The

The Everton Encyclopedia is a massive tome of knowledge that is essential to any Everton fan.

The book is an A-Z covering every player and manager in the clubs history (accurate up until the end of the 2011-12 season), major fixtures, rivalries, competitions at home and abroad and even entries on more abstract themes such as Joe Royles 'Dogs of War' and Everton fanzines. Literally anything or anyone you could think of is here.

The main strength of the book is as a who's-who of Everton talent, and you will find a comprehensive biography of the playing careers of every Everton player within this book, including full season by season career records (games(substitutes appearences)/goals). Naturally more page time is dedicated to those players with the greatest edigree at the club. Each entry is complete with various photos, and there are hundreds of photos throughout the book.

The book is a very candid read and presents the various personalities in a 'warts and all' fashion, celebrating their strengths and successes but also speaking freely about their failiures and weaknesses.

Alongside acollades regarding greats the likes of Southall, Ratcliffe, Sharp, Sheedy etc, there are also the tales of woe regarding Evertons late 90's financial woes, the acrimonious departures of players such as Speed, Kanchelskis and Barmby, unpopular personalities such as former chairman Peter Johnson, the corner cutting regarding the treatment of player injuries that hastened the retirement of promising players such as Hinchcliffe, Ball and Parkinson, and the players who failed to make their mark, never reached their potential, werent good enough to begin with (I'm looking at you Claus Thomsen!), or fell foul of the wrath of managers or the authorities.

Honestly, I cant imagine why any Everton fan or any fan of football knowledge could consider giving this book less than the full five stars.

I bought this for my elderly Dad, and he absolutely loved it. He said that it gave him a real blast from the past to read about all the players from the past, forgotten by many but not by real fans like him. He said that he'd be dipping into the book again in future.
