I have heard about Mermaid/Mer people books in the blogosphere but hadn't read one ever. Ok, I read the little mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen a few decades ago, but that's it. I wasn't sure what to expect but Everblue definitely surprised me positively.
The book tells the story of the two best friends Ashlyn (Ash) and Tatiana (Tatchi). They want to go to college together, though Tatchi's family isn't supporting at all. Actually there are few weird things going on in Tatchi's family. Then there is an unexpected family emergency, strangers are moving into Tatchi's home and Ash is worried endlessly. At the same time she has to deal with high school life, competitive swimming and her crush on Tatchi's twin brother Fin. And then she learns the family secret.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The story was fast paced. We got to know the main characters which are interesting and likeable. The chapter are written alternately from Ash's and Fin's point of view. This helped understanding them both better and what was going on between them. We got to know about the mer people. The paranormal part is well written und believable (if one can say so in a paranormal context). I like the description and details about the undersea world. It made it come alive.
In addition there a bit of a mystery story going on. Fin and Tatchi's father is on a top secret mission and the two siblings along with their mother have to find their way in undersea kingdom.
The romance between Ash and Fin is very sweet without becoming annoying. And there is a cliffhanger! Which makes me eagerly awaiting the second book in this series, which isn't even announced yet. Overall a very interesting read.

When I bought this book, I was not entirely sure what it would be like. Having read the book, I can clearly say that it is one of the best books I have ever read and I thoroughly enjoyed it! The plot was fantastic, and there were a lot of unexpected twists as we followed Ashlyn and Fin through their colliding worlds.

Ashlyn Lanski is a teenage girl who loves swimming, but hates her 'boring' life. Along with her best friend Tatiana, she plans to leave to a college in Florida, unknowing of the secrets about her best friend and her best friend's twin. Then, when Tatiana and her family leave and don't return, a fateful twists thrusts Ashlyn into the middle of a confused and troubled world under the sea (lake!).

Secrets lurk beneath the deep blue waters of Lake Tahoe, and a simple lifesaving kiss could change their lives forever.

I didn't think this book would be very good, and I wasn't going to get it, but I'm glad I did. It is written it first person from the two main characters pov. The book was free as well, which surprised me as it is a great book. The writing is professional, and it has an interesting but easy to follow plot.
It's a fantastic book and you will definitely regret not buying it.
But most importantly......... ITS FREE!!!!!!!!!!

Wow; where to start. I guess I downloaded this book on a whim because it is free. It took. Little while to get into; and at points it's incredibly cheesy, sometimes forced, with clunky dialogue. But you know what... I still liked it. It's feel good, with a half decent plot and I actually started finding the Natatoria world more real. I guess I will be buying the next book, it's reasonably priced. Sometimes you just can't beat YA fiction.

Ah, who doesn't love a good mermaid story?

I started reading this a while ago, but never got to the end. This time I actually finished it, and am about to start the sequel, Evergreen.

Basically, Ashlyn's best friend, Tatiana, is a mermaid. Her whole family are mer, including her twin brother Finley, Ash's long-term crush. Their father guards the Lake Tahoe gate to Natatoria, the underwater land of the mer.

When their dad is requested for a mission, the twins and their mother are stuck in Natatoria. Meanwhile, Ash is getting close to the most popular guy at school, while worrying herself to death about her friends' disappearance.

Fin sneaks out of the gate without permission, witnessing Ashlyn falling off a boat and injuring herself. The only way to save her would require the life-long joining of their souls. As punishment, Fin is thrown in an underwater prison, until Tatchi breaks him out and the pair escape Natatoria together. Again, they are captured - only this time, their punishment is to be promised. For mer, a promising is more powerful than marriage. But Fin is already promised to Ash, and he refuses to allow Tatch to be promised to someone she loathes so much.

Their father returns to break them out of Natatoria for good, but for Tatch he's too late. The family flees without her, blocking up the gate in Tahoe. For a while, Fin and Ash finally get to be together, until the family receives word of mermen heading their way.

I'm really not a romance person, especially not cheesy romance. I do love a good mermaid book, and the way this is about a human girl and a merman (as opposed to the other way round) is refreshing. But it's just a bit too lovey-dovey for me, and rather predictable.
