It’s an intriguing premise, though it could have so easily slipped into yet another Hunger Games imitation – and it didn’t. Britta is a strong, likeable protagonist and as I became engrossed in the story as she attempts to uncover the truth about her father’s killer, I relaxed into the narrative and enjoyed the ride. The inevitable romance was well handled, so while there was sufficient about her growing feelings for the object of her affection, it didn’t slow down the pace of the narrative or get in the way of the unfolding adventure. Meanwhile Britta’s search uncovers some shocks about her own family that she didn’t know. There were some moments of real poignancy with plenty of surprises along the way.

I didn’t guess who killed Britta’s father, though that doesn’t mean very much – I generally don’t bother to try all that hard, preferring to leave it to the author to reveal the suspect. My only slight niggle was that after a difficult hunt full of tension and adventure, I did feel the final act tidied everything away rather too hastily for the amount of effort it took to get there. However, it’s not a dealbreaker – I really enjoyed the vivid worldbuilding, the unfolding political situation and learning about Britta’s backstory, so that I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more books in this series. Receiving a copy of Ever the Hunted from the publisher via NetGalley has in no way affected my honest opinion of this book.

Now this was fun! I love it when a book is so much fun and this one really did impress me. This book has so many twists and turns that I cant really tell you more about it without spoiling it. So in this case the blurb will have to be enough.

What I can tell you though is that this book will surprise you over and over again. While I thought I had it all figured out from the start it has proven me wrong over and over again. You cant knock a book that has you gobsmacked several times.

My favourite part about this book is the characters tho. Britta being the main one and also the most interesting. She has grown up with only her father around and Cohen who her father was teaching to track. Alongside Cohen she has learned her fathers skills. When Britta is left to fend for herself she proves how strong and capable she really is. I also love Britta with Cohen, I love the history they have together. It makes for such a interesting reading. A nice change from reading about people meeting for the first time. They have a special kind of bond that will get tested by some very strong accusations.

However this book is a little slow in parts, not quite boring but not really super exciting either. Its really the twists and surprises that make this book a special one. But sometimes that's also ok, between some heavy reads it is nice to have a book that hasn't got so much stuff going on. Which you can just pick up and enjoy without clearing your schedule.

All in all this has been a fun read that surprised me and left me wanting more. I recommend this to anyone who wants to just put their feet up and enjoy a little escape.

But while the story isn't at its full potential yet I think it has the power to become something great still. I am going ahead and setting my expectations quite high for the next book.

ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

In short, I didn't like this. The pitch with its promise of a dynamic heroine on a quest of revenge was brilliant. Sadly the book just didn't deliver. While the prose was clean and easy to read, unfortunately there was little substance. This is a story that pulls all of its punches, never letting you get close enough to the main characters to find out whether you liked them or not. Ultimately this should have taken me two days to read not two weeks, but it plodded on and it wasn't hard to put down. At 75% I really had to push to finish it.

There were a few big problems for me but one of the main ones were that there seems to be YA trope bingo going on as without fail the story hit every trope going. Pretty white girl heroine who believes she's unattractive? Check. Slightly roguish love interest with a heart of gold and enough arrogance to make him seem unattainable? Check. Special snowflake power that is oh so rare and yet oh so obvious in the MC? Check. Dastardly plot with the murderer turning out not to be the accused? Check. Rape threat used to control MC? Check. The list goes on. In fairness anyone who has only read lightly in YA fiction may well love this. I just didn't see anything here I hadn't seen done before and done much better.

My other big issue was how stupid the MC was. Seriously, everyone kept saying how smart, capable, competent and compassionate Britta was but at every turn she did something idiotic. If you want your MC to appear clever then she has to make clever decisions at least some of the time - you can foil her after that with unforseen consequences. Add to Britta's stupidity her complete lack of agency and you have a real dodo-bird here.

Combining forbidden magic, a murder mystery and a smouldering romance with a dangerous quest, Ever the Hunted was captivating and full of surprises. Britta is an outcast in her village with her only friends being Cohan and her father. When Cohan is accused of her father’s murder, she must track him down in exchange for her freedom.

Britta embarks on a quest to find Cohan with three of the king’s guards in tow, which takes her into a forbidden kingdom. She must decide who to trust as well as discover her father’s secrets and her mother’s past along the way.

I loved that it wasn’t too heavy on the world-building, but there was enough to understand the different powers and imagine the different kingdoms. There wasn’t a plethora of different characters which allowed the writer to focus on the development of the main characters and the story. I really loved Britta and Cohen and their sweet, slow building romance. Britta had a hard, lonely life, but that didn’t stop her from fighting on and trying to find her father’s killer. I liked her straight away and felt her conflicted emotions and uncertainty. Cohen is smart, loyal and desperate to protect his family and Britta. I also enjoyed Britta’s relationships with the three guards, which added another layer to the story.

The story progresses smoothly, slowly revealing its secrets to the reader. There were a few things that I guessed but others that came as a complete surprise. There wasn’t a cliff-hanger ending, though there are enough unsolved mysteries to keep me itching for the next book in the series.

In summary, this is a young adult, fantasy romance that kept me intrigued til the end. It was a light, enjoyable read and not too heavy on the world-building. I loved the characters, the magical kingdoms and the romance was realistic and slow building.
