5.0 out of 5 stars A worthy book on a classy lady
By Ellsbells on 19 July 2017
Updated Review: What do you do when a reviewer repeatedly makes negative comments on most of the books written by a particular author? I would like to think that the people who read Amazon’s Reviews before deciding whether or not to purchase the book, realise that this same ‘reviewer’ has nothing to offer but consistent vitriolic remarks about an obviously well written and researched subject and therefore disregard ‘Dr.Praetorius’s’ comments. The evidence is there: take a look at the majority of positive reviews of this author’s books and, more importantly, buy the book and judge for yourself.
I have bought several books written by Stephen Bourne and have found the diverse subjects he has written about to be of more than a vague interest. As his subject matters do tend to be those that have not been too saturated on the publishing market, I would go along with describing them as 'groundbreaking'. All the photographs in this Evelyn Dove book are apparently owned by the author, except for three (Cranleigh School Archive and BBC Photographic Library who were acknowledged as the owners). The chapters refer to a variety of subjects such as Evelyn Dove's family; her involvement with the Royal Academy of Music; Southern Syncopated Orchestra; variety theatre and cabaret; her travels and appearances in Europe, India and US; and BBC radio/tv appearances. A fine piece of writing, by a proven and knowledgeable writer.
