It's hard to believe that this contest has been running for nearly 50 years. It may be viewed as tongue in cheek pop music but The Eurovision Song Contest has survived all the jokes and jibes to become the longest running television show in history. Twenty three countries are participating in 2001's event, held in Copenhagen and all the national entries are featured here in their entirety.

As always there is a wealth of different genres all with a common thread, an un-definable ingredient making each sound similar to the last in one way or another. The quintessential Eurovision sound is no more apparent than on the single-syllable intro of Arnis Mednis' "Too Much" which morphs from Euro-pop to heavy rock then into what could be likened to early Steps. There are some commercial house tunes like "Energy" by Nusa Derenda and the UK entry "No Dream Impossible" by Lindsay Dracass. David Civera's Spanish entry, "Dole que la quiero" has the makings of a lambada-style summer smash hit but the stand-out track is Skamp's "You Got style" which sounds funky like a female Prince with an upbeat catchy chorus. --David Trueman

If what you're looking for is a CD that can sum up Eurovision, this is it. A relitively unremembered year, you won't hear the usual songs that people hum when Eurovision is remembered. And gladly so!

It has the cheese people assosiate with Eurovision, (Listen to your Heartbeat - Sweden / Angel - Iceland).
It has the unusal oddities which are rarely not present in the contest! (Lady Alpine Blue - Russia)
It has the try-(maybe too)-hards, (Energy - Slovenia / You got Style - Lithuania)
and of course,
It has the die hards! (No Dream Impossible - UK (who else!) / On My Own - Norway)

So if you're looking for a classical example of Eurovision, at its best, without having to save your kisses or put a puppet on a string, make your mind up and buy this CD!

The huge arena spectacular that is today's Eurovision Song Contest was taking shape by the 2001 show in Copenhagen; its audience of nearly 40,000 has not been equalled since. Another trend, ethno-pop, also took flight here with the Swedish-Greek duo Antique. By mixing Euro-dance with a splash of bouzouki instrumentation they hit on a winning formula that was to be copied by many countries in the coming years. Not only was '(I Would) Die for You' the big hit of the class of 2001 (top ten in Greece and Scandinavia) it marked the transformation of Greece from Eurovision also-rans to one of its big hitters. Antique's singer Helena Paparizou snatched Eurovision victory for the Greeks four years later with a similar slab of machine-tooled Hellenic flavoured dance-pop. This year's line-up had the usual mix of non-entities, local legends, talent show winners and future stars in the making. Russia sent its biggest rock band Mumiy Troll while the French sent an unknown ballad singer from Quebec, Natasha St-Pier, who went on to become a major name in francophone record buying markets. The winner from Estonia failed to be a hit but is notable for several things: one half of the duo, Dave Benton from the Caribbean island of Aruba, was the first black performer to win at Eurovision (at 50 he was also the oldest), and the Baltic country's victory was the first for a former Soviet republic. We didn't have to win long for the next one; the 2002 winner was to come from Estonia's neighbour Latvia.

2001 - A great eurovision year!!

Second in the series of full eurovision releases, and what a success. All the songs from the 2001 contest including 16 year old Lindsay Dracass singing "No Dream Impossible" for the UK (should have finished higher in my opinion) and the cool winner from Estonia.
All songs are recorded brilliantly. Don't worry it's not one of those live CDs that sounds terrible.
Summary: Highly recommended.

This is a brilliant compilation, and I think that this is a great idea to place all of the Eurovision songs on general release. This year is no exception, with high impact, fast beat songs from the Uk, Slovenia, and ABBA-esque entries from Greece and Sweden. A nice mixture of ballads compliment the CD well (from France and the Netherlands). All-in-all, a great mixture and variety of songs, definitley an Album must for all Eurovision fans, and possibly even non-eurovision fans. Who said ALL of the music in Eurovision was bad?
