In carefully crafted official statements, the European Union presents itself as an honest broker in the Middle East. In reality, however, the EU's 27 governments have been engaged in a long process of accommodating Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories.

Journalist David Cronin interrogates the relationship and its outcomes. A recent agreement for 'more intense, more fruitful, more influential co-operation' between the EU and Israel has meant that Israel has become a member state of the Union in all but name. Cronin shows that rather than using this relationship to encourage Israeli restraint, the EU has legitimised actions such as the ill-treatment of prisoners and the Gaza invasion.

Concluding his revealing and shocking account, Cronin calls for a continuation and deepening of international activism and protest to halt the EU's slide into complicity.

It is well known that Israel has utterly corrupted the political process in America for it own ends. This book shows that Israel is now extending the same malign influence into Europe; that it has extensive tariff free trade with Europe and extensive military links and is now seeking to influence European foreign and domestic policies--all this and Israel is not even a member of the European Union. This is a consequence of the lack of transparency and democratic accountability of the European Union whose political structures are far too remote from European voters.

Interesting facts and figures and educational insight into the cash flow from the EU to Israel and the EUs total surrender to Israeli demands. Students and activists ought to have read this book.

Apart from the very many factual errors in this book, it is by no means a serious book from any vantage point one may choose. Its author is not only highly selective on his sources but there are so many errors and disinformation that even the odd fact that could possibly be construed as factual is thrown into doubt. The amount of fact on the subject is very limited and overall the book does not only do a diservice to what is an intresting topic but misleads its readers, overall a book not worth purchasing or bothering about, it is of no significance.

The activities of pro-Israel pressure groups and lobbyists in the US are well-known. But the pro-Israel lobby in Europe is less studied, so this book which identifies the pro-Israeli groups which attempt to influence policy-makers and implementers in the EU is a much-needed look at the profoundly damaging sway that Zionism and the current regime in Israel have on our political masters.

In David Cronin's book Europe's Alliance With Israel: Aiding the Occupation he argues that despite occasional and weak rhetorical statements criticising Israeli human rights abuses, both the EU and it member states' governments have been busy developing and entrenching economic and symbolic relationships with Israel. The book traces the development of these ties, explains how and why this partnership functions, and exposes the rank hypocrisy underpinning this relationship between institutions that claim to uphold the primacy of human rights and the serial and systematic human rights abuser that is Israeli state. The book is a highly accessible - though ultimately depressing - guide to a subject that is criminally under reported, namely the shocking complicity of the EU with the Apartheid State of Israel.

An important book that reveals the shocking level of cowardice shown by our political elites in Europe. They have become complicit in gross and systematic violations of International Law by Israel. Cronin's book is essential reading for anyone interested to understand the appalling double standards by which western governments operate when they speak of 'democracy' and 'human rights'.

David Cronin is a journalist who has been based for many years in the belly of the beast, i.e. Brussels, the "capital of the European Union". He knows intimately what he is writing about, and has been privy to a great deal of anonymous information from EU sources as well from named interviewees from among the EU elites. This gives his book an authenticity that is supplemented with exhaustive documentation (22 pages of useful end-notes), a punchy, economical style, and a clear commitment to the political justice that he sees travestied by an EU that pretends that it "actively promotes and defends [human rights] both within its borders and when engaging in relations with non-EU countries" while refusing to suspend the massive trading privileges it concedes to Israel despite that state's flagrant violations of Palestinian human rights, and hence of the Euro-Mediterranean Association Agreement that governs trade relations between Israel and the EU.

While unflinching in repeatedly condemning Europe's responsibility for the Holocaust, he rightly rejects the illusion that unconditional support for Israel's crimes against the Palestinian people constitutes some sort of perverse atonement on Europe's part. He traces in meticulous detail the labyrinthine links between the EU and Israel not just in matters of trade, but also in military and scientific research of the most lethal kind, for which the hapless Palestinians have often served as guinea pigs. Cronin's native Ireland, often seen as the EU country most sympathetic to the Palestinian cause, gets away with nothing: it is shown to pay lip service to Palestinian rights while consistently playing along with the most reactionary and hypocritical policies of its EU partners, led by Germany, France, Italy and the UK, but backed most enthusiastically by the Eastern European member states with their paranoid terror of Russia and worship of the USA.

I recommend this book without reservations.
