Product Description

From the Back Cover

Updated with the best of recent scholarship, while maintaining its hallmark features, the second edition of The European Reformations is an outstanding introduction to the sixteenth–century Reformations in Europe. New sections include coverage of the Catholic Reformation, the Counter–Reformation, and the Reformation in Britain. The book continues its tradition of presenting material in the most lively and accessible manner possible, and sets the origin of the Reformation in the context of late medieval social, economic and religious crises, carefully tracing its responses and trajectories through the different religious groups. Together, religion, politics, social forces, and the personalities of the time are woven into a singular compelling narrative.

With its seamless synthesis of original material with updated scholarship, The European Reformations provides the most comprehensive and engaging textbook available on the origins and impacts of Europe′s Reformations – and the consequences that continue to resonate today.

An execeptionally helpful overview of the Eurpean Reformations which is both readable but has enough depth to really get insight into that fascinating period of time. It is primarily a historical account before being a theological account, but it was really extremely helpful to me as someone who knew very little about the Reformation - building the scaffolding that I can now hang the theology from. I would definitely recommend the Sourcebook too, which has some of the original writings of the key people and events.

HASH(0x8c5dfd2c) out of 5 stars Excellent text 14 Jan. 2013

This is an excellent text for general coverage of the Reformations. It is packed with information, and has a lot of valuable detail (particularly of a philological and theological nature) set out in a way that the general reader can grasp. It is a little boring and shallow here and there -- one longs for more quotes and stories from the period to liven things up, but you can't have everything. It is pretty well a perfectly workable intro to the period.

The Kindle edition is riddled with typos (runon words). No idea why that is, perhaps it is just a basic Kindle flaw.

HASH(0x8c91bdbc) out of 5 stars Not too shallow and not too deep. Just right. 4 Dec. 2013

Excellent book. Not too shallow and not too deep. Just right. The author has a very nice writing style also. In the middle of a semester, reading a bunch of authors who all sounded alike, Dr. Lindberg's style was a nice break.
HASH(0x8c930d44) out of 5 stars Text for a fascinating period 3 Sept. 2015

Textbook for a course. Professor specified the second edition. This seller specified second edition, which gave me confidence I was buying the right thing. Fascinating period. Good coverage of the intellectual processes, with extensive coverage of the social changes of the period that drove the spread of the ideas.
