James Joll's "Europe Since 1870" is an excellent history of this period up to about the 1970's or so. Indeed, it is about the best there is apart from Felix Gilbert's famous "The End of the European Era 1890 to the Present" which is more comprehensive and extensive on the post war (WW2 that is!) period.

Other volumes that cover international history are worth reading for their European content especially Keylor's "The Twentieth Century World and Beyond" and Woodruff's "A Concise History of the Modern World." These are all excellent works to get an overview of World or modern European history in the last century although none of them really does as well as necessary on the East.

Perhaps some rising scholar might see fit to update and republish Joll's handy volume as Large has done for Gilbert's book. If not get it while you can.

This is an incredibly detailed account of the development of Europe since 1870. In his book, Joll skips from one country to another in the space of a few lines, making detailed comparisons along the way. However, this can make the text hard to follow and it is certainly not a book for the faint-hearted - long, complex sentence after long, complex sentence does not make for a light read! Nevertheless, as a reference work this comes highly recommended.

I always go to the book before i read journals. It will always give you a general overview on the subject at hand. As for using it for indepth material, there are some sections that are well detailed but other more focused books will do this much better.

Since I am a History major any history book needs to be a good read. Sentences shouldn't be too long over stuffy, it should be accessible. And this book was. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

I bought this book as one resource for my module in European History as part of my degree. Joll is easy to read and covers Europe from 1870 to 1945. I would recommend it for students or anyone interested in this period of time.
