Every rider interested in dressage MUST read this book. I also recommend all his other books such as the Training Strategies and the Athletic Development of the Dressage Horse. My favourite quote from Charles De Kunffy is "Aiding always leads to the development of a relaxed horse, enjoying his work, while compulsion leads to a sullen tense and disobedient behaviour. Beauty ultimately looks like the manifestation of happiness. Much more scarce than beauty is the ability to recognize it and allow oneself to be captivated by it." I have been lucky to reach this level of unity with my horse after 30 years or riding and studying masters like Charles De Kunffy and all the old classical masters. In addition I have been studying philosophy and Eastern Religions and mindfulness meditation . It takes many years to reach spiritual maturity, to understand horses and that their submission has to be earned . All this is described beautifully in this book by a very wise old master - Charles De Kunffy.

The contents of this book is wonderful, but beware, the new 'printed' version (on the fulfilled by Amazon option at least) is very poor quality and appears to be a scanned image printed on demand. The pictures are way too dark and mainly look like sillouettes, with the text being very variable. Not what I'd hoped for at almost £24 for a paperback of only 115 pages!

I have known Charles De Kunffy for years, and the man has only gotten better with age. He knows dressage. This is a wonderful book that should be read by every person who has an interest in dressage.

Great little book. Describes what it takes to become a true equestrian -- more than just the mechanics. Delves into the requisite essential personal character traits and knowledge.

I think every rider should read this book! Hopefully it will make people take notice and put the horse first instead of winning a "ribbon".
