I only got 2.5Mbs from my 40Mbs broadband using this LAN plug. Its only virtue is its cheapness.
I only wanted one of these as my new Ultrabook does not have a LAN socket due to the thinness of the case!
A good LAN plug will cost around £20.
this adaptor might look pretty but that's just about it. i have been waiting for it for a fair amount of time as it's being shipped all the way from across the globe, and once it arrived there was simply no way to actually make it work.
the driver cd that was included simply did not work for me, i was getting a program termination error as soon as i even tried to start the setup. i contacted the seller for a new set of drivers, i got a link in response. those drivers actually did install fine for me but they didn't do a thing! my laptop still does not recognize the device at all.
i just gave up and ordered a £40 adaptor from another store... at least with that one i won't have to go for a trip to china to get it fixed!
- Windows 8.1 will download a driver, it works
- Mac 10.9 - there is a driver on SourceForge (didn't bother to test)
- Ubuntu 14.04 - out of the box
- Android - Nexus 7 KitKat 4.4.4 doesn't have the driver. I had to recompile the kernel with DM_9601. Now it works.
It should come with a CD, but if it is faulty (mine was for the Mac drivers), here is a link to a website which can provide the Mac drivers only. (You will probably need the x86_64 drivers for modern macs, including the Air and Pro)
I tried the adaptor out, and it is zippy and I had no noticeable difference between the speed of this adaptor and my wifi connection at home.
Overall, excellent product, just might turn out to be a little tricky to install.
It's pretty slow, but better than nothing at all. With many new devices now not supporting RJ45 Ethernet ports it's worth keeping one of these to hand as an emergency fallback device for when WiFi doesn't work. At the low asking price there's no reason not to.
