Roger Mainwood writes and directs this hand-drawn animation featuring the voice talents of Jim Broadbent, Brenda Blethyn, Pam Ferris and Virginia McKenna. Based on the autobiographical novel by Raymond Briggs, the story follows four decades in the lives of an ordinary couple living in London. Beginning at their first meeting in 1928, events that fill Ethel (voice of Blethyn) and Ernest (Broadbent)'s days include the Great Depression, World War II, the invention of the television and the birth of their son, Raymond (Harry Collett/Luke Treadaway).

On screen the beautiful artwork has the added benefit of perspective and movement to capture the intimate day to day details of their lives. The voices of Jim Broadbent and Brenda Blethyn are excellent choices for the lead characters giving full expression to their domestic conversations and arguments about politics which draw in events going on beyond their four walls. There is a lot of humour and some genuinely sad but unsentimental moments.
A loving tribute to two people which is also a moving personal and social history of the period.
The whole film is laced with some brilliant one-liners which I can also picture my grandparents and in-laws saying without any intentional humour. For example, when domestic metal is collected for the war effort, Ethel says to Ernest 'I can't imagine my front gate being made into a spitfire'.
I highly recommend this film and actually think it should be used as an educational aid in schools.
Beautifully done. Recommend one to watch, again and again.
Makes you appreciate how special this generation truly are. The roller coaster life folk from this era have lived. Decent people, living through hard times, appreciating everything and experiencing the first of many things (Telephone, tv etc). This is such a heart warming film. A great film for all ages. Many could learn from this film. I care for the elderly, most from this generation. I have the upmost respect for them. I bought this film for the home where I work. I hope it will fill them with warmth and pride of how very special they are. Many think they are just old...they're so much more. This film is a must watch.
