The greatest gift a writer can give readers is something different. Natalie G. Owens, in this series (more books to come happily), is doing just that. It's what I call trail blazing.
She has imbued historical fantasy with a brilliant love story and added dark magic and a great villain as well! The love story is gripping and the characters, Adrian and Emma are so well drawn and emotive, those looking for romance will be delighted.
Yet--! Well I said it was different didn't I, there is darkness and magic; there is a also tale of immortal beings woven into the plot and truthfully, I found that fascinating.
Because of the romance and the realism of the lovers, there is suspense which is caused by a well-drawn baddie in the guise of Madeleine.
There are glimpses into the next books which sound, again, very different and pretty spectacular. I am looking forward to reading them.
The writing is elegant and the plot and characters are handled well. As a matter of fact the historical aspect is spot-on.
Really enjoyed it.
Also, this first installment lays the grounds for a much bigger plot, that of the Valthreans and the Cult of the Snake, which I definitely want to find out about. And don't get me started on Max :) (Cue: bring on book 2 ASAP!)
Definitely a fab read :)
