Amazon.com: HASH(0x9a2e3838) out of 5 stars 1 review
HASH(0x8de7ad38) out of 5 stars a fresh, vibrant and jittery energy-splatter that’s fun and fulfilling 19 Jun. 2014
By Charlie Quaker - Published on Amazon.com
3rd release from Portland, Oregon band who play with a captivating post-punk psychedelic urgency. The guitar riffs are crisp & terse, delivered with riveting detail and the sort of give-me-more tremoloed brevity that recalls Tom Verlaine. Garagey keyboards, a rumbly-pointed bass that mixes lead lines and rhythm, and driving basement-punk drumming combine for a gripping retro power flash. Mark Herman’s vocals are slightly ominous, on the edge of breaking—both themselves and other things. The band has upped the songwriting quotient with tight, strong melodies that are memorable and edgy, even incorporating a buzzing hint of gothic pop. Their 2010 album “The Subliminal Man” was brilliantly caustic and intense. This one is a different animal: equally stunning with just a bit more polish on the reverb, a slightly more accessible desperation and a growing sense of structure in the angular fire. I can hear similarities to Television here, plus early Cure/U.K. Squeeze meets the Yardbirds…and the Wipers, Mind Spiders, Richard Hell & the Voidoids, Chameleons U.K., Disappears, Secret Machines. Limited edition pressing on black-peppered clear-red vinyl. The Estranged have a dangerous appeal that will call you back to play again & again—and reward you with a fresh, vibrant and jittery energy-splatter that’s fun and fulfilling. Recommended.
