This may be the only recording of Antonio Estevez masterpiece 'Cantata Criolla'. And may well be the only attempt from a venezuelan composer to create an operatic piece with strong theme and challenging music. Not for the heart fainted, Cantata criolla is a contemporary composition with the dark and dramatic overtones that will transport onself to that duel with the devil. The only downside, it's very short!

Brilliantly executed by director and orquestra, but keep in mind, the only recording done. I dare anyone to give it a go to such challenging piece.

Estévez and Villa-Lobos stand among the best South-American composers of all time. The OSSB,joined by two excellent choirs, did justice to these scores that represents the force of Nature. In Cantata Criolla, The Venezuelan plains (Sabana) are depicted through a figurative language that recounts the never-ending battle of good and evil. In Chôros No. 10, the Brazilian Jungle (Amazonas) gets its rendition through an expressive romantic narrative.

The Orchestra is the first OSSB, the one that is the foundation of El Sistema, conducted by the late Eduardo Mata, an outstanding musician that foresaw the diamond this movement would become. Both works deserve to be in any collection. I recommends this and the other Dorian recordings made by this unforgettable partnership.

Although Villa Lobos was Brazilian, this joyful, hypnotic work for large orchestra and choir is given the definitive latin polish by the phenomenon that is the Venezuelan Simon Bolivar orchestra... the South American composers are really largely ignored in the concert hall and a great deal of similar grand epic works for vast orchestration are worth exploring - Naxos have many.
Someone had the foresight to add this to the 2009 Last Night of the Proms so you can hear and SEE this on Youtube and also view some archival performances - even conducted by Villa Lobos himself.

HASH(0x9ac881bc) out of 5 stars Excellent 11 Nov. 1998

'Cantata Criolla' by Antonio Estevez (a venezuelan composer) resumes the authentic sounds of venezuelan plains. The combination of the choir as a narrator, the soloists as 'Florentino' (a cowboy) and 'el diablo' (the devil) as the principal actors and the orchestra creating the environment is wonderful handled. It's a supreme music work and, I think, the most important work of venezuelan 20th century music. It's a "must-be-listened"...

HASH(0x9ac884f8) out of 5 stars Great recording of great repertoire 4 Oct. 2005

The Est'vez is definitely the find of the decade, if not century. It seems we would have no knowledge of this were it not for Eduardo Mata. He is sorely missed. His series of recordings with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra is outstanding, and perhaps never more so than here where he is presenting unknown repertoire. The recording is fantastic, but so is the music. Worth noting is how the Dies Irae is combined with native elements in ways beyond description!

By the way, the Villa-Lobos is good too. But imagine a disc where it's not the main draw!

HASH(0x9ac88648) out of 5 stars Great recording of music that deserves to be better known 5 Feb. 2007
By David Ira - Published on Amazon.com

I recently participated in a performance of this piece. It is dramatic, tuneful, colorful music, featuring complex Latin rhythms. A crowd-pleaser that is becoming better known in this country and deserves to be much better known. The recording fully does it justice, with great performances by soloists, chorus, and orchestra.
