Book Description

Nutrition is one of the most important determinants of individual and public health. An increasingly informed public expects its health and food professionals to be able to offer clear, evidence-based advice on diet and associated health implications, but how can established nutrition principles be extracted from the extensive body of often misleading information available in the public domain?

For those embarking on courses in nutrition or related subjects, Essentials of Human Nutrition offers a broad, quality survey of the field. Chapters written by international experts chart the involvement and impact of nutrition across different age groups and from the genetic to the community level. It draws together the wide spectrum of disciplines, from biochemistry to counselling, necessary to promote the practical application of nutritional science at the human level, providing
everything a student needs to appreciate the increasingly recognized importance of nutrition to health and disease.

- Disentangles scientifically established nutrition principles from the morass of misinformation available in the public domain
- Data sets and extensive referencing ensure the content is firmly anchored in nutrition science
- Practical processes with which students need to be familiar, such as dietary assessment and food analysis, are covered

Product Description

Review

This textbook provides a starting point for those embarking on courses in nutrition and related subjects and offers a broad survey of the field. (Food Science and Technology Abstracts)

Like previous editions, the fourth edition of this multiauthored book ambitiously aspires to be a simple reference work on nutrition, which will be useful to a very broad readership... Do the authors succeed in their aim? I believe that they do. New students of human nutrition, as well as scientists and clinicians working in related disciplines, will find a wide range of basic and up-to-date information, written in an eminently readable form. (The Bulletin of The Royal College of Pathologists, August 2013)

I returned this book within minutes of purchase because it is suppled in a new 'enhanced' format. The new format has some reasonable features but sever limitations. It is effectively a PDF type view but the Kindle viewer has very poor functionality compared to say, Moon+ Reader pro. You cannot select a text reflow format or change the background colour for ease of reading. It is also incompatible with my phone (so I could not download it on that device)
My rating is based on the book, which I subsequently bought in paperback. I've only read a couple of chapters but it is exactly what I was looking for. I have the 2nd edition and the updates effecively make it a new book. I will add a review against the paperback when I have read it. In the meantime just to provide a balance of considerations, the paperback weighs 1.54 kg, so not very convenient for carrying around.
Very pleased as usual with Amazon's support with instant phone service to return and refund the Kindle version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essentials of Human Nutrition 19 May 2012

A serious tome which is really easy to read! Not just for the medical profession, but anyone interested in food and diet. Well laid out and easy to move between subjects. Not cheap, but well worth the investment.

Bought for my course. Very technical and not an easy read. I wish these things were a bit more lively.

Not really happy with Amazon as I bought the Kindle version of this book (already owned the actual hardback copy as part of my study course), but found that I could not transfer the e-book (cost of which was over £37!!!!!). When I contacted Amazon Customer Service i was told that there was no refund on e-books, but as a courtesy Amazon would give me a £5 discount/gift, but this has not been received or put onto my Account, so I paid £37 for nothing. So the negativity is not to do with the product, it is to do with Amazon Customer Service in firstly not refunding me the full £37 - after all it is not an actual "product", just an e-book - nor at the very least the £5 discount I was offered but never received.

The book is recommended reading for my course. It is set out clearly and well organised. It is technical and some knowledge of chemistry and biology is a bonus before reading.
