Unfortunately I have not had time to read all of this book but from what I have read I found it very interesting. There is historical information about Victor Hugo and how his writing/poetry fitted into the political/social situation of the time and evolved in response to those situations plus circumstances in his personal life. Although my French is extremely rustic now I like the fact that the poems etc written by Hugo are presented in both their native French language and their English translation. Even though I understand only a little of the original French writing to me it more accurately reflects the feeling of the poems than the English translation, but the English translation also helps with understanding the general thoughts behind the poems.
