    Excellent book!
  • Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 June 2009
This book, although written by and clearly aimed at Americans, is still an enjoyable introduction to the basics of cycle touring that can be useful to those of us from Europe. It is written with enthusiasm and obvious experience, a great book for the absolute beginner to the joys of cycling and camping. Although some of its more technical aspects cannot really be applicable to Europe, the basic practicalities of cycle touring are well covered.

All the information in this book can be found for free on the internet. It still does it's job well, and has collected useful info in one place, but time has moved on.

This how to tour guide might not be the newest book out there on the subject. But I can say that is once you are past the basics of cycling, the book is essential. It has great information in depth on the subject of touring by bicycle. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars best touring book
Reviewed in the United States on 27 August 2014
So far, this has been the best touring book I've read. The author gets into the nitty gritty, like how to pad your bike in a shipping box, and balance and adjust gear if it causes a shimmy. He also covers the big picture, like ways to be mellow and relax about progress if things slow you down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative Book on Touring for the Cyclist
Reviewed in the United States on 29 April 2010
This is a good book to get an overview of touring by bicycle. This book is published by the same publisher who published Trudy Bell's The Essential Bicycle Communter, which is unfortnately out of print and should be a canidate for updating.

The Essential Touring Cyclist has been fortunately been updated and kept in print. I found the information useful. Maybe this is not the right book for an experienced touring cyclist, as some other reviewers have mentioned. While this book gives an excellent overview and tips to prepare for a cycling adventure, it could have been a bit more detailed like Bell's book--why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars.
