At the risk of cliche, if you only buy a single
book this year, please do yourself a favor and
make it "The Essential Rumi." Rumi is for
Americans who think that Islam is all about harems
and terrorists. A sultry serenade to God, Rumi's
poetry explodes in the soul with a beautiful force
that tears down the wall between the individual
and the Divine. Jelaluddin Rumi was a 13th
Century Sufi mystic, the founder of the so-called
"whirling dervishes", whose inner exploration
allowed him to attain a rare level of enlightenment
and connection with God. His poems resonate with
truth and wisdom so earnest that it is impossible
not to be swept away on a tide of pure spiritual
longing and fulfillment. This is a book for
anyone who loves poetry, religion, God, or love.
And if you don't love these things now, you will
by the time you finish "The Essential Rumi."

It has taken me to the age of 60 to find Rumi. Perhaps I would not have been so moved by his work when I was younger but it would have helped me a great deal. I cannot comment on the translation other than to say that it feels and sounds right. Speaking the poems aloud is almost magical and the message so enriching. Of course it is not the beauty but the meaning that is all important. Be empty - how simple, but how hard.
Namaste.

One of the most comprehensive translations of Rumi's work by Colman Barks and is a constant companion. I thoroughly recommend this book!

Rumi's poetry touches Soul in Its deepest recesses, reminding us of the value of silence, of contemplation, and of seeking God within ourselves. Sprinkled throughout his poetry, is a liberal dash of Light and Sound, the two manifestations of God's voice on Earth. We too can contact these two aspects of God, and almost magically, Rumi's poems all fall into place. This book is more than a book of poems. It is something akin to a map, detailing one man's spiritual journey into the Heart of God, and then back into society, to live amongst the "sleeping."
Shams of Tabriz makes a few appearances in the writings of Eckankar, as well as in this book, and filled me with excitement as my eye fell upon his name. For those interested in the Light and Sound of God, check out this site: [...]

My congratulations and thanks go out to Coleman Barks as well, for capturing the lyric magic and the musical spirituality that fills Rumi's works. Thank you, and my congratulations on a job well done.

If you're into mysticism and you love poetry, then this book will be a pleasure to read.
The contents of the poems are diverse, sometimes short poems, sometimes long ones, and sometimes short stories.

How do you speak of the unspeakable? How do you speak of what is endless, infinitely encompassing and infinitely close?
Knowing the gate of inspiration words remain fresh and spirited. Love and devotion shift the limits of what can be said.
Rumi's power and clarity comes regularly right out of the page, full in your face.
Rumi writes in the tradition of Sufism, and this (both Sufism and Rumi's poems) is much more universal and accessible than you might expect.
If you do not take care, it will open your heart.
A very inspiring book!

This book is better than I could have hoped. It is absolute nourishment for the soul and I love the way that Coleman Barks arranges the poems. Indeed, he does a marvellous job at translating Rumi's golden words into English! I have such love for Rumi right now, as well as for Shams of Tabriz, the man who fuelled Rumi's passion. How has this book escaped my attention until now? Why is it not on every book shelf? Blessings to the Friend, who breathed air into Rumi and played him like a reed-flute. His words have rang out through the centuries and will never stop vibrating!
