What can I say!! I bought this double cd after I had just found my old vinyl 45 of Freebird/Sweet Home Alabama/Double Trouble in the attic, I decided I needed to test out some more of Skynrd as those were the only tracks which I had previously heard. If you are like myself and only know Skynrd for those few tracks then I do strongly advise you to purchase this double cd!! Its rock, its boogie, its bluesy, its smoltzy and the guitar playing is exceptional, this is music which should be listened to, (for those midnight mellow moments), the vocals by Van Zant are fabulous. This is one of my best buys this year along with the Deep Purple 2cd Made in Japan album. If you only remember Lynyrd Skynrd for Freebird, give this a try...you won't be disapointed, you will be taken into a whole new form of music, I was!!. American boogie rock at its best.

Format: Audio CD
Lynyrd Skynyrd are primarily remembered for two songs - Sweet home Alabama and Free bird - but there is so much more of their music that is worth listening to.
Sweet home Alabama is an ode to the pleasures of living in Alabama, whatever Neil Young might think - the Canadian rock icon (whose music I also enjoy) had recorded a couple of songs, one titled Southern man and the other titled Alabama, which offended them. Despite the reference to Neil Young and another controversial reference to Alabama's then-governor (George Wallace), this song is essentially a joyous, fun song and should be taken as such. I've never been to Alabama, but this song makes it sound like paradise. Neil Young's song made it sound anything but.
Free bird has become a classic piece of rock music. Apart from its sheer quality, its length (almost ten minutes) helps its popularity in jukeboxes - you pay the same to play a record whatever its length, so you get your money's worth with Free bird. And you get two versions here - the original studio version from 1973 plus a live version from 1976.
There are many other great tracks here, among them I ain't the one, Simple man, Saturday night special, Tuesday's gone and an amazing cover of J J Cale's Call me the breeze.
Lynyrd Skynyrd were among the best southern rock bands of the seventies, perhaps even the best of all. This collection contains all their best music, superbly re-mastered and with extensive liner notes.

Only being familiar with "Sweet Home, Alabamha" and the ubiquitous"Freebird", I listened to this with a fair degree of expectation. I haveto say that it only took a couple of listenings to grow to LOVE thisalbum...highly recommended if you aren't too knowledgable about LynyrdSkynyrd and want to be blown away at the variety and sheer hard-rockingtunes you'll get here!

I just can't rate this album highly enough. I'm too young to remember Lynyrd Skynyrd first time around and bought this album after hearing 'Freebird' on the radio. I'm now totally hooked. I agree with other reviewers that this album contains many fantastic songs that people may not be aware of and the album as a whole is absolutely brilliant. I still have to rate 'Freebird' as one my favourite songs of all time though - the last five (instrumental) minutes of this song are just sublime. You don't need drugs or alcohol to feel high when you've got music like this.

The band (pronounced LEH-NERD SKIN-NERD, and the title of a 1973 album) was formed in the late 1960's by lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. The band's name comes from a high school 'coach' Leonard Skinner. After playing small gigs around Jacksonville they established themselves in the 70's with a string of successful albums and songs including Nuthin' Fancy and Sweet Home Alabama. (some songs featured on this album are taken from Nuthin' Fancy). Their success was cut short at it's commercial height by a tragic palne crash that killed Van Zant, new guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines and assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick. A very unfortunate and awful accident. This album is a fantastic collection of their greatest hits. It is a very impressive CD. A must have for any fan of rock and roll or blues.
Thankyou, I'm here all week.

The Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd...So just what does set this aside from the countless other Skynyrd compilations?.

All the usual suspects are here, " Freebird", " Sweet Home Alabama", " Tuesday's Gone" & " Simple Man". It replicates the incredible single disc compilation " Gold & Platinum" which was released 19 years earlier, with the exceptions of " On The Hunt" & " Down South Junkin'".

The following sets this aside. The two excellent demo's of " Comin' Home" & " The Four Walls Of Rainford". An unedited live version of " Freebird" as well as the full length original. A magnificent acoustic version of " All I Can Do Is Write About It". Unlike the majority of the other compilations, this has excellent photos, liner notes and it's superbly remastered

If you want a brief fix of Southern Fried Genius, then " Gold & Platinum" is the one.

If you want to indulge and get the bigger picture then this is your stop.

Brilliant:AAAAA+++++

As compilations go this is easily the best Skynyrd collection there is,2 cd of classic after classic with a few rarities thrown in.

The famous songs are all here Freebird,Sweet Home Alabama,Call Me The Breeze,Gimme 3 Steps,That Smell,Tuesday's Gone etc, lesser known tracks like Simple Man ,I aint The One, Was I Right Or Wrong fleshing out the cd.

The highlight for me was that you get both versions of Freebird, studio version concludes disc 1 while the live version closes disc 2,and i believe that this live version comes from the original cd's of 'One More From The Road' which has been replaced on the deluxe edition,so this is an easy ,cheap way to get the original overdubbed live version,

The music on this collection is magnificent while the booklet is a superb authorative read, splendid value for money.
