About the Author

B.A., University of Redlands; Master of Divinity, Emory University; Ph.D., Northwestern University, Communication Studies. Rhetoric and Cultural Studies. Teaching and research interests include theories of the public and public discourse, public speaking, rhetorical theory, debate and deliberation, critical theory, and Cultural Studies. Dr. Lundberg also teaches the First Year Seminar "Think, Speak, Argue," which focuses on debate and public speaking skills as pedagogical tools and as critical components of democratic life. Dr. Lundberg's current research focuses on theories of the public as a social and discursive form, and on the animating principles for public discourses and identities. His book, Lacan in Public: Psychoanalysis and the Science of Rhetoric, University of Alabama Press (2012) works through the implications of Jacques Lacan's psychoanalysis for thinking the rhetorical character of publics as social formations and of the public discourses that circulate within them. He has also written a number pieces that unpack forms of discourse constituting specific publics, with special attention to the intersection between publics and religious discourse in Islam and Evangelical Christianity. At the level of specific practices of public discourse and pedagogy, Dr. Lundberg's work focuses on rhetorical theory, and on debate and public speaking as critical democratic forms. He has authored textbooks relating to rhetoric, public speaking, and public deliberation, including a Public Speaking textbook with Cengage Learning titled Public Speaking: Choices and Responsibility (2014) and The Essential Guide to Rhetoric (Bedford St. Martins, 2007).

Format: Paperback
If you're looking to buy a book on rhetoric, because rhetoric is so broad in its scope, it might be useful to know in advance what you might be getting.

As you explore this book, you will notice that it's very reasonably priced, some books on rhetoric are priced in the stratosphere, and some are definitely not what they appear to be. This particular book is about 80 pages long and clearly designed for college students.

The Essential guide covers the orgins of rhetoric, from Aristotle and his speech styles: forensic (for Trials), epideictic (eulogy), and epideictic, and in part 2 Argument and persuasion, organisation and style, and includes a sample speech, so you can design your own speech.

My particular area of interest is style, particular word styles, figures of speech and patterns, and I like the examples in this book. It gets into tropes, and Klimax, and explores several things I have not read in other books.

If you're new to this I recommend it, you can become pretty knowledgeable about rhetoric in a short time, and it's user friendly. I recommend Shakespeare's Wordcraftif you are interested in exploring rhetorical patterns, particularly Shakespeare, and Longman guide to revising prose Longman Guide to Revising Prose: A Quick and Easy Method for Turning Good Writing Into Great Writing:.

I hope you find this helpful.

This book should be on every single person's reading list--unless you are a hermit meditating all day and have no social interaction. It is vital for understanding political discourse, deciphering commercials, chatting down the pub, influencing and negotiating with your family, giving presentations for work, or written work for your job or degree.

HASH(0x989ad0d8) out of 5 stars An excellent, terse explanation 4 Jan. 2010
By W. Harman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
An excellent, terse explanation of a fairly complicated subject. Keith & Lundberg have done excellent work in distilling the elements of rhetoric and placing them in the broader context of composition & communications. This slim volume will help fill the gaps for any student of language, writing & rhetoric.

HASH(0x989a9fc0) out of 5 stars Suitable Introduction for the Student or Non Student 12 Jan. 2010
By S. Pactor - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I became interested in the area of rhetoric after doing some general historical reading about Greece and Rome. Rhetoric is a complex word with more then a thousand years of accumulated meanings, so I thought I would look for a short introduction to the topic as a way to guide me through further readings.

This is almost as much of a pamphlet as a book- fewer then a 100 pages in length. It does a capable job of introducing the subject, though I was hoping for a "further reading" list instead of footnoted reference. Def. served it's purpose.

HASH(0x98b2db70) out of 5 stars Practical 20 April 2012
By Mr. Thielemier - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This guide may serve as either a practical primer for the new comer or a good review for the more seasoned rhetorician. Given the place argument and rhetoric now hold among the Common Core State Standards, The Essential Guide to Rhetoric proves a valuable resource for all teachers of reading and writing. The guide is broken into two sections, Rhetoric in Theory and Rhetoric in Action, detailing fundamental information about rhetoric, speech, argument, and persuasion in a very accessible way. Great information that good teachers should know.

HASH(0x989dab28) out of 5 stars helps me better understand other books I've read on rhetoric 15 Jun. 2012
By Maculata - Published on Amazon.com

When reading anything on rhetoric, one must determine what the author even means by the term. This valuable, little work starts with an analysis of the different definitions of rhetoric. How helpful since other works I've looked at tend to assume a certain definition and run with it.
