This excellent collection of Dylan Thomas's works wins hands down. First and foremost is the perfect UNDER MILK WOOD - the 1954 BBC version that featured Richard Burton AND Richard Bebb as First and Second Voice. This was before the gaps were joined up, and the whole lot given to Burton as 'First Voice' - not the wisest decision, I feel. Burton is magnificent throughout, of course, but can be too much of a good thing. The alternating First and Second Voices keep the listener on his/her toes, and this version of the play, which is very slightly shorter than its 1963 successor, can't be faulted. Worth purchasing THE ESSENTIAL DYLAN THOMAS for this one item alone.

But there is also so very much more to be enjoyed here: we are presented with a lovely cross-section of the poetry and prose that this extraordinary Welshman produced in his short life - and it's magnificently performed throughout by an excellent cast, not all of whom are 'household names' - a refreshing change, thank goodness.

Thomas himself features loud and clear: RETURN JOURNEY TO SWANSEA is a delight, the poet's lilting voice linking an altogether speedier and more urban portrayal of daily life than that to be found in the cobbled streets of Milk Wood, and his performance of QUITE EARLY ONE MORNING can't fail to enchant.

Some modern recordings make up the balance of this excellent-value 4-disc set (my one regret being that, good though the late Philip Madoc's rendering of A CHILD'S CHRISTMAS IN WALES is, it simply can't compete with Thomas's own hilarious reading for Caedmon.)

All things considered, on listening to THE ESSENTIAL DYLAN THOMAS one cannot but rage, rage, against the dying of the poet's own very individual light - a light that was extinguished far too early.

There will only ever be one voice for Under Milk Wood: Richard Burton's.
There'll never be another Dylan Thomas either. Why would you want a different recording!

Very good introduction to Dylan Thomas and his work. Some of the reading may appear a little dated, but Richard Burton and his contemporaries cannot be beaten.

This audio book which includes a BBC radio broadcast of Under Milkwood is simply spell binding. It features Richard Burton and colleagues whose voices transport one to the small Welch village where Dylan Thomas presents a masterpiece which captures the imagination and provides unending pleasure to the listener.
