Product Description

In his short life Charlie Poole altered the shape of white American Folk music by pioneering the band set-up, approach and many songs that would be the backbone of Bluegrass. Just by his way of living he created the Country outlaw archetype and his recorded output that consisted of drastic re-workings of a multitude of songs from different traditions and eras resulted in some of the greatest music of the 20th century which has been passed down from generation to generation and continues to do so still and hopefully will as long as people listen to music.

All I heard of Charlie Poole is song on the Bluegrass Bonanza box called If the river was whiskey. This song recorded in the 20s is what became Hesitation Blues. Its been recorded by at least a dozen different 60s bands.
Yet how many copies does this sort of thing sell? There's no reviews here to say whether this is as important as the "essential" tltle suggests.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Great Collection 15 Mar. 2011
By Heath Edan Combs - Published on Amazon.com

This is a pretty good deal (maybe even a steal!) if you're looking for Charlie Poole recordings. Most of this appears to be in chronological order and you'll find a lot of the fiddle tunes, plus some of the extended ramblers' recordings, including a few from Roy Harvey. I would say that I still like the the (more expensive) You Ain't Talkin to Me set better because it's an amazing introduction to the "life and times" of Charlie Poole and a complement of music styles from his era and region, as well as some older cylinder stuff he probably learned from. This collection here, Essential Charlie Poole, is the one to get if you want CP's stuff, plus the great Flyin Clouds, Ragtime Annie, Richmond Square stuff, which I think is just as essential Ramblers' material as the rest, without buying the county records releases. (apologies to county)

Now, some of the recordings aren't the quality you get on You Ain't Talkin to Me, but you can make due perfectly well with these recordings, especially if you're used to the scratch of old records already.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good music 21 Nov. 2011

The CD has a lot of good music but you can tell it was made from wax or vinyl. Lots of scratchy static on multiple songs.
