This series of books has provided me with 2 kitchen essentials in this book and the pasta book. The Essential Asian Cookbook offers a large number of recipes from numerous Asian countries from Japanese Sashimi to Indian Madras and everything in between. The recipes in this book are authentic and tasty and cater less for those looking to recreate the salty sugary dishes served at greasy woks but instead will open your mind and palate to the wonders of real Asian cuisine.

My mother and I both have this book and we have yet to produce a failure when cooking from it's pages. we have both cooked, among others, Thai, Vietnamese, Indian and Chinese dishes without any need for special equipment other than a good wok and with out having to go hunting for any specialist ingredients outside of our local supermarkets save for Chinese barbecued pork (Char sui) which is not a complicated staple to make at home and freeze. There are numerous recipes online as well as in the book.

The actual recipes are very easy to follow and most dishes are accompanied by a picture that accurately represents what the recipe produces and each recipe finishes with the nutritional information such as calories, fat content and cholesterol.

If you want a good one stop book for authentic Asian cooking then this book belongs on your recipe book shelf.

This is pretty much what I cook from all the time, really interesting recipes, the ones I have made haven't been too complicated and try have all been lovely. I've bought it as a present a few times and would definitely recommend it

This is a good overall primer, with plenty of recipes from the region. The only real let down is the photography which seems insipid when compared to other cookbooks from the "Murdoch Books" series. Few shots leap of the page at you, and they should do given the vibrant nature of the ingredients. It works well though and doesn't make the mistake of having to many unobtainable ingredients, well not if you can get to Wing Yip or China Town that is.

March 2010 - Update. Just returned from Cambodia and was dissapointed to note that not one of the dishes I enjoyed there was recognisably represeted in this book, not even the "National Dish" Amok. Not sure this book is really up to scratch after all.

I bought this book for my partner as we both love Asian food. We've cooked many of the recipes and found each one to be excellent and very easy to follow. I like the way it explains ingredients that are 'foreign' to us in the Glossary - like Kecap Manis (dark soy/treacle/brown sugar), which is a basic ingredient in Indonesian cooking.

The recipes are very easy to follow and, unlike some of the reviewers of this book, I found the photographs very true to colour and the ultimate result.

You won't need to buy any other Asian cookbook, if like us, you enjoy cooking, but are certainly not experts in Asian food.

Great recipe book. I love asian food and this one offers such a variety. It has many different regions of Asia included and the recipes are very easy to follow. A few of the ingredients are difficult to get hold of even though i've tried quite a few asian supermarkets but they are easily substituted for available alternatives.

Would reccomend to anyone who enjoys eating genuine asian food, one of the best asian cookery books i've had.

This book is fantastic!! It covers most of the Asian countries, with new and exciting dishes that you may have not heard of. It's not your average Asian cookbook, where they think all we want to cook is what we can get at a takeaway, there really are some unusual recipes in here. Nicely set out and easy to follow. There are photographs for the majority of dishes too. I highly recommend it.
