About the Author
William Shakespeare (Author)
William Shakespeare was born to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden in late April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. He wrote about 38 plays (the precise number is uncertain), many of which are regarded as the most exceptional works of drama ever produced, including Romeo and Juliet (1595), Henry V (1599), Hamlet (1601), Othello (1604), King Lear (1606) and Macbeth (1606), as well as a collection of 154 sonnets, which number among the most profound and influential love poetry in English. Shakespeare died in Stratford in 1616.
Good Wives and Warriors (Illustrator)
Good Wives and Warriors is the creative partnership established by Becky Bolton and Louise Chappell after graduating from the Glasgow School of Art. Their experimental collaborative approach to illustration and installation has led to exhibitions and a wide range of projects all over the world.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Escape to Shakespeare’s World is based on various plays and sonnets written by William Shakespeare to commemorate 400 years since his death. This is a wonderful book, one that is essential for Shakespeare admirers, but also for those who love Good Wives and Warriors' work and who love imaginative and beautiful illustrations. It is the same size and shape as the others in the series at just over 18cms square, it’s a little smaller than the bestsellers but I think this adds to the charm and it means the images are a manageable size and the book is a perfect size for travelling and colouring on the go. The book has a softback cover which is almost all double thicknesses of cardboard as it folds in on itself and when opened up it reveals a beautiful purple background with white line-drawn images of flowers. The cover has silvery-gold foiling accents which really add to the luxury of the book and are a lovely bit of extra detailing. The book contains 96 pages of double-sided, borderless images and is glue-bound meaning a little of each image is lost into the spine. I found the spine pretty tight when it arrived but with some work it has now loosened up a lot and lies flatter than it did. The images are a mixture of single and double-page spreads and a number of them have black backgrounds which is a really nice feature. The paper quality is very good and hasn’t bled or shadowed at all when I’ve been using water-based fineliners or fibre-tips.Read more ›
Escape to Shakepeare's World is another beautifully illustrated book by Good Wives and Warriors. I honestly can't recommend their "Escape To" series enough. They are incredibly talented, the illustrations are beautiful and so varied. You get an incredible amount for your money with all their books.
This book describes itself as "bringing the beauty of Shakespeare's plays and sonnets to life." The books measurements are approximately the same as their previous work in the series, 18.5cm x 18.5cm. The book is on the darker, creamier scale of white, but still very much white. The paper quality is good, I had no problems with gel pens or fineliners, however extensive layering with pencils was difficult as the tooth disappeared quicker then expected.
All images are printed double sided with multiple detailed double page spreads. A lot of the illustrations run in to the spine.
Multiple illustrations contain pre shaded black backgrounds or black elements to them. Interspersed among the illustrations are quotes from Shakespeare's sonnets and plays, allowing you to relate the images to each work!
I honestly can't recommended this highly enough. The illustrations are so varied it's easy to find something depending on your current mood. It really is a beautiful book.
Inside the book has images from Shakespeare. Along with the starting images which are of Shakespeare himself there are a range of different things to colour. The pictures are grouped in different Shakespeare plays and feature The Merchant of Venice, The Tempest, Macbeth, Hamlet and A Midsummer's Night Dream among a few others. On almost every page there is a line from the play followed by the name of the play (in case you didn't know).
I love the images because they are all so different. In the Romeo and Juliet pictures you have one image which is literally the stage set up of Verona with other images including flowers and poison and a dragon. There are pictures of a canal in Venice and a feast on a table, a castle in Scotland, a skull, fungi, etc.. Because the pictures are all different it really has an appeal to me as sometimes I tire of flower images in all the books. The images are all detailed enough to leave you with a lot of colouring but don't have details too small to colour in.
Overall I really enjoy this book. The only down side is that images run right into the spine and even though I always crack open the spine of my colouring books it's still tough to colour the entire image into the centre. But considering how varied and detailed the designs are, I would still recommend this book for anyone, whether you enjoy Shakespeare or not!
Its a small coloring book with lovely prints that have the Shakespeare theme.
Good paper, can use gel pens, all types of coloring pencils even with gamsol.
I do recomend this book!
