Inspiring photos - but for the rest...

This book attemps to be two things: an account of the author’s year-long overland bike journey from Dumfries in Scotland to Hong Kong and a general guide to adventure cycling in its various forms. It’s fun and inspiring to leaf through this well-presented book and the photographs are well chosen and of high quality. As such, it’s not a bad investment. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really deliver on either count mentioned above. The story about this fascinating journey is short on the nitty-gritty of Cunningham’s actual ride while too expansive about generalities and sometimes downright clichéd, while the basic information about getting visas, camping in the wild, what bike and equipment to choose and so on is just about enough to whet one’s appetite but no more. Would-be adventure bikers need to look elsewhere (the Trailblazer Adventure Cycle-Touring Handbook is a good place to start) for more detailed and satisfying information.
