Product description
A collection of films starring Errol Flynn. Flynn made his starring debut in the classic swashbuckling adventure story, 'Captain Blood' (1935). He plays a surgeon wrongly imprisoned for helping rebels. Mr. Blood escapes and becomes a pirate in the Caribbean, before founding the 'Brotherhood of Buccaneers' to fight the villainous King James II. In 'Dodge City' (1939), Wade Hatton (Flynn) is a cattle buyer who soon makes a name for himself after arriving in the small frontier town of Dodge City. Wade not only helps catch cattle rustler Jeff Surrett (Bruce Cabot), but leads a covered wagon train to safety. However, this fails to impress the beautiful Abbie Irving (Olivia de Havilland), who blames Wade for the death of her brother in a stampede he accidentally started. When Wade discovers that Surrett has taken over Dodge in his absence, he puts on the sheriff's badge in an attempt to clean up the town. 'The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex' (1939) is a Hollywood history lesson detailing the doomed affair of Elizabeth I (Bette Davis) and Lord Essex (Flynn). In this version of events, Elizabeth is plagued with jealousy whenever the rakish Essex shows an interest in other women, and she eventually has him executed as a traitor. 'The Sea Hawk' (1940) is another swashbuckling sea adventure set on the Spanish Armada during Elizabeth's reign. Flynn leads the British against the Spaniards to a rousing score (nominated for Best Music Oscar) by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. 'They Died With Their Boots On' (1941) is an epic western chronicling the life and times of George Armstrong Custer (Flynn). Custer is the man in charge of the Seventh Cavalry, and when corrupt officials break a treaty with the Sioux Native Americans, it is up to Custer to protect the Dakota territory from attack. Finally, 'Dive Bomber' (1941) is an exciting aviation film about experiments which attempted to eliminate the dangerous phenomenon of pilot-blackout. The film was nominated for an Oscar for its camera work.

I bought this set because I love film and I like Errol Flynn. The audiences for whom these films were made enjoyed the stories, the sets, the costuming, the direction and the wonderful film scores. This was filmmaking at its zenith, and this was a star who enjoyed putting some great stories onto the silver screen as much as he enjoyed playing the bigger-than-life parts of overblown and legendary historical figures and tough guys. (I mean, come on, nobody ever complained about Dumas' characters being historically accurate or politically-correct, but we all love to watch Richelieu direct Rochefort, D'Artagnan receive the diamond ring from Anne of Austria, single-handedly repair to the Duke of Buckingham and thus avert a war between Britain and France, and Aramis carry Charles I's amulet and last message from the chopping block to Queen Henrietta - and Dumas was notoriously mixing up historical events and figures!)
The highlights of this set are those films in which Flynn played with some fabulous leading ladies, such as Elizabeth and Essex with Bette Davis, and Dodge City and Captain Blood with Olivia de Havilland, Sea Hawk with Brenda Marshall (and a beautifully-played Elizabeth I by Flora Robson returning to the successful role from Fire Over England with Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh) showing an absolute chemistry between Flynn and his costars. His performance as a flight surgeon who has to win the respect and confidence of a seasoned squadron of pilots led by Fred MacMurray in Dive Bomber is understatedly well executed as the story of the development of the pressure suit is played out on screen. His first appearance with Olivia de Havilland in Captain Blood, and his first swashbuckling part, is made all the more enjoyable when Sabatini's story is set to music by Erich Korngold and directed by legendary Michael Curtiz. What this set is sadly lacking is Robin Hood and Don Juan, with Steiner's score, to round it off nicely. If you enjoy classic films and big stars, great film music and classic directors, you will enjoy this set.
The six films are Captain Blood, Dodge City, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, The Sea Hawk, They Died With Their Boots On and finally Dive Bomber. Between them they run the gamut of the genres Flynn worked in - swashbuckler, romantic, westerns and war films, and shows off his range of talents. He buckles on his swash and romances his way across our screens for over eleven hours of action packed derring-do and adventures. It's entertainment of the highest order!
Each film is presented in a nicely restored print with a decent soundtrack. I do not know too much about the other films, but Captain Blood is definitely the longer 114 minute version rather than the shorter film more usually seen. Each disc is loaded with extras, including newsreels, cartoon shorts and makings of for each film. As with other WB releases of films from the period it is unclear what some of the extras actually have to do with the film. But if you're like me and get DVDs for the films and are not too worried about the fripperies then this is the ideal way to get hold of these films. Each film by itself would cost as much as this entire set, and the quality of the release in terms of remastering and picture quality is really top notch.
There are two normal DVD cases, each with three discs. The whole lot is collected into a sturdy card slip case, and looks quite elegant on the shelf.
It might be a bargain basement price, but it is a top quality release. Buy it, and allow yourself to be transported to a world where men were men, who had thrilling adventuresand always got the girl whilst dispatching the villains to satisfyingly sticky ends.
confirming once again that he is the best performer ever in sword fights as well as the most brilliant actor in romantic swashbuckler roles with his unique classy style. Films such as "Captain Blood" and "Sea Hawk" just to mention a few, have that "little extra" getting older not only with dignity but remain the very best adventure films ever.
Still I would have loved if classics such as "The Adventures of Don Juan" and
"The Adventures of Robin Hood" were included in this collection.
