Customer reviews
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 June 2011Reread after 25 years - a 'tour de force' brimming with ideas , wonderful prose ( to my eye/ear) and an amazing story - most unlike any book I have ever read - I would pronably include it if there was a book version of Dessert Island disks ! Enjoyed more 2nd time round being a lot older and hopefully a little wiser - it was a very old 2nd hand copy and the pages have gone orange but as they say " Don't judge abook by it's cover " wonderful...............

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 March 2014This is an excellent book which I enjoyed on so many levels, from an historical perspective, from a psychological aspect and from a sheer page turning storytelling viewpoint. Tournier gives us a view into the Nazi mindset and tells, compellingly, how it can draw an innocent (if somewhat odd) man into it's web. His detailed descriptions are magical. Order this book at once!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 February 2016A quite outstanding novel, poetic, brilliantly translated, with an oblique, transcendent take on twentieth century savagery.

An amazing book about a misfit Frenchman captured by the Germans in the second world war who becomes responsible for recruiting youths to be educated in Hitler youth schools and ultimately perishing in the Russian advance. A stunning insight into the twisting of German mythology by the Nazis for their own purposes.
