Product Description

Be There Or Beheaded

In the age of Ragnorok, when all the earth has been laid waste by snow and ice, one Viking must take his men into battle against the very gods themselves in order to bring back the sun.

Meet Erik (Tim Robbins), the world s most sensitive Norse warrior, a man with little time for pillage and no taste for rape. Erik killed a girl once and he feels very badly about it. Erik isn t really like the other Vikings but now he must take his warrior clan to the gates of Valhalla itself, braving harsh seas, terrifying creatures and horrifically atonal singing along the way.

From Monty Python star Terry Jones comes an hilarious Viking satire that proves you can fight the Gods and still have a good time.

By Nicholas Casley TOP 500 REVIEWER on 29 Dec. 2015
In short, this is a generous DVD package for a disappointing film.

The original concept – which was designed to be a movie for children – is that Eric is a traditional Viking but one with feelings. With all those top British-stage and Hollywood actors, with Terry Jones both writing and directing, with designs by Alan Lee, what could go wrong? Well, the result is a film that is ponderous, clunky, and silly without being witty. For instance, the opening scene features a Pythonesque ridicule of social custom but is only mildly amusing – in places.

Compared to Gilliam’s ‘Jabberwocky’ or ‘Time Bandits’, ‘Erik the Viking’ is hard going. (I was going to say that there is more humour in ‘Valhalla Rising’, but that’s stretching it a bit.) There are two versions of the film on my DVD set: the original ninety-minute theatrical cut and a seventy-five minute version edited down by Jones’s own son. The latter is not perfect but it is certainly not so loaded down as the original, especially at the start. It’s not all bad news. Visually, the film is on a par with some (and only some) of Gilliam’s work. There are some stimulating visual concepts at work especially at the end.

The director’s commentary appears on both cuts, but the one on the shorter version is the same but re-arranged! Except that the commentary is not strictly a commentary at all, for Jones is actually being interviewed by an appalling toady (called Jaz Wiseman?) who tells us vital nuggets of information such as that Norway is cold and Malta is sunny.

The interviewer is uncritical and agrees everything that Terry Jones has to say and they both laugh a lot. Jones agrees that it needs recutting and that twenty minutes worth of the film needed editing out.

With the same producer as Life of Brian (John Goldstone), same Director (Terry Jones) and several other Python related figures, such as Julian Doyle - who edited Life of Brian and is 2nd Unit Director here, Neil Innes - who composed the music and, of course, John Cleese in an excellent role as the villain Halfdan the Black - this movie has lots of great moments, and even if it can't be considered as the top of any participant's career - it's still a good movie.

An example for the Python style humor:
A worried mother's farewell to her Viking warrior:
- If you have to kill someone kill him, don't stop to think about it.
- I never do.

The box contains both the UK Theatrical Cut (90 min.) and the 2006 Director's (son) Cut (75 min.)

The issue of all the different cuts is discussed in the following extras:
- Booklet that comes with the box.
- Interview with Terry and Bill Jones on the first disc (7:22 min.)
- First half minute of the Director's Commentary track (2006) on the shorter version (Disc 1)

I haven't seen the movie before the purchase of this DVD, and I chose to begin with the shorter Director's cut.
After watching both, I can understand why Jones wanted to re-edit, but I'm happy that both versions are available here.
While the shorter version may help the flow of the movie, it inevitably loses some good LOL moments on the way, for example:

The scene where the boat lands in sea after the fight with the dragon and is about to drown - is almost completely cut.
We don't see how they almost commit suicide all together seconds before realizing they're in shallow water, and we also miss some LOL moments, such as:

Herald the Missionary (Freddie Jones): Let's all sing something.

what can I say about this film, it is a comedy classic for sure
John cleese, Terry Jones, Tim robbins the list goes on
for fans of the film you know what the plot is and what the film is about
so this review is about this 2 Disc set
I gave this DVD 5 star rating cause you get 2 versions of this film on 2 Discs
and many new featurettes
which I didn't know there was 2 versions I thought there was just the Theatrical release
but there is the new Directors cut which is actually be shorter than the Theatrical version by 10mins
this is Bill Jones version of his father's film which is shorter version for some reason
I've seen both versions and it make no difference to me
it's any fans guess why Bill and Terry decided on a Directors cut version shorter than the Theatrical release
I prefer the Theatrical version cause I grew up watching that, but each to their own, it depends on what you like

regarding special features/extras,
there is making of TV special from 1987
there is a new interview with Terry and Bill Jones
an audio commentary with Terry Jones
there are also featurettes like Evolution of the Director, casting of a comedy adventure
Jones and cleese Grand reunion, the special effects of Erik the viking and more

so this 2 Disc set is definitely the complete Viking no doubt about it
and fan of this film must get this 2 Disc special edition.
