Sonic mush - so so disappointing JJ would be sad.
on 14 October 2014
This should and could have been a real masterpiece if the production team had understood the essence of JJ Cale's recordings. I understand that the album is a tribute and that the artists are trying to emulate JJ's sound and style rather than doing their own versions - I get that. Not sure why others on this list have complained about the approach here and expected the artists to do their own versions of the songs? My complaint is that for such a stella group of performers the production is simply shocking - awful in fact. This sounds like it was not so much crafted as rushed out into the market before anyone else could get something else out there in tribute. As a massive JJ fan myself I was also surprised at the omission of many of the classic JJ tracks. But its the awful tone of this album that makes it hard to listen to. Awful, awful, awful!
My main gripe though is the poor quality of the production - remix the whole thing for a start and get closer to the warmth and organic sound of JJ Cale's albums - isn't that what he was all about?
I can only assume this was done cheaply with modern digital gear without much care which seems at odds with the whole idea of the project - remember JJ Cale was a talented recording engineer and producer in his own right and crafted sonically interesting albums even when he had little access to the best gear.
Such a shame that this was not more lovingly created! A real missed opportunity. Eric please fix it!
