About the Artist

Erik Mongrain is an amazingly talented 28 year old acoustic guitarist from Montreal Quebec. He has a unique playing style, reminiscent of such virtuosos as Stanley Jordan, Don Ross and the late Michael Hedges.

I bough this after seeing some of his stuff on youtube, watching him play is really interesting but just listening to the cd I got bored after a couple of tracks, His tapping style, which is fascinating when you watch him play, is pretty restrictive for his songwriting.

If anyone has bought "Fates", you must buy "Equilibrium"! Mongrain's work is pushing the boundaries of music and the guitar once again. His unique feel and compositions are a portrayal of his knowledge, experience, frustration, questions, answers and opinions, analysed through his genius 2nd album. Enigmatic and strong, this is a revolutionary album. This sounds like a voice of his message and understanding of his art.
A true and innovative acoustic master using altered tunings, percussive sounds, tapping, harmonics, melody, odd signatures, classical finger picking, independent rhythms and fusion feels. Every song is magnificent and titles like "Silent fool" or "Pandora's box", swept me away by his grace and imagination. If you understand his perception of each song, you understand how these songs are very intense and huge. He plays whats needed to create the desired effect. He does not keep it nostalgic or just randomly play a cacophony of notes to suit all those "widdly widdly" listeners!
I find it an equally nourished album to his first album "Fates". A great feature of this album, is that you are able to see the different tunings for each of his songs which is a fantastic bonus to experimental guitarists or musicians.
Guest appearances include Michael Mannering on this album which was a nice collaboration.
Buy this for yourself to see what the hype is all about. With great players like Dufour or Mckee out there, in my opinion, Erik is a notch above these players!

Erik is an acoustic guitar genius - I've played this about a gazillion times since I got it a couple of weeks ago. I'd really like to see him playing live (he's got a few videos on his YouTube channel).

The fretless bass (Michael Manring) on a few of the tracks is absolutely divine, too.
