About the Author
Lynne Featherstone was the Liberal Democrat MP for Hornsey and Wood Green between 2005 and 2015. She was a junior minister with responsibility for criminal information and equality, then international development, before becoming a Minister of State at the Home Office. She was the originator and architect of same-sex marriage, and Equal Ever After tells the extraordinary story of how she made it happen.
Lynne spearheaded the government campaign to end female genital mutilation within a generation, and continues to campaign tirelessly against inequality. She won the Stonewall Politician of the Year Award in 2014 for her work supporting equality for LGBT people.

Or in other words, even if equalities and the Liberal Democrats don't interest you, there's still plenty in this very readable book of interest about how politics works in modern Britain.
Apart from Lynne's account of how she delivered same sex marriage, there are also some interesting insights into the workings of the coalition. Why did she get told off by Theresa May and how did she react? Which Liberal Democrat “flounced”? How did she keep same-sex marriage on track when the Tories look flaky?
All these questions and more are answered. Occasionally, when you are reading it, you jump a bit and you have to check that she really, really said THAT in print.
There’s serious stuff, too. Lynne writes about tense meetings with Governments with repressive anti-gay laws and her mission to tackle violence against women and girls across the globe.
This book takes you through a range of emotions, from anger at the prejudice LGBT+ people faced and continue to face across the world, to heart-melting, tear-filled happiness as you read the accounts of the weddings Lynne attended that first day.
You also marvel at Lynne's patience. If Nick Clegg had done to me what he did to Lynne on his first big reshuffle, I'd have put custard in his shoes.
It's a fantastic account of all the twists and turns - the heroes and villians - the history of prejudice and the ongoing struggle for LGBT equality worldwide. It's a true insiders account of how this law was passed - and an explanation of how such a progressive and historical event happened.
Buy it, read it. And then buy one for someone else! Because we all know someone whose life may have changed as a result of this story!
