Gone to Recycling Heaven.

Bought printer in December 2010 and my husband and I have been at war with it ever since.
Have had problem connecting it to computer and have reinstalled software again and again. Put in new set of expensive Epson Cartridges a few weeks ago, printed a few sheets and it would not recognise the cartridges.

Had constant problems trying to get it to print even when the cartridges were working. It would go through all the machinations of printing but nothing would be printed. On average two out of every ten efforts at printing were successful on the first go. Never had anything in my house the was quite such a piece of junk.

Have had constant ear ache from my husband because I was the unfortunate who purchased it. It went to the recycling centre yesterday. I have two perfectly good sets of ink cartridges sitting in a bag which are now useless as both have been opened.

Spent a lot of money on cartridges for this printer, as they had a very short life span, would have been much cheaper to buy new printer, which I am going to do, and it will certainly not and never will be, an Epson.

For anybody looking to buy a printer don't be fooled by the price because you will pay ten times over in your time and energy,cartridges and high blood pressure.

Can't express enough how god awful this printer was.

Ink compatibility issues

My Epson SX515W arrived with compatible ink rather than original Epson ink.
Worked immediately without problem, but after only very light use, the PC software started to report empty ink wells. Strangely, the printer's indicators show full ink. I could still use the offline copy function. On next use onwards, the printer rejected the ink as invalid.

If I search for Epson SX515W ink, my printer and a whole load of compatibles and a few heart wrenching priced Epson originals appear. There are even recycled Epson cartridges too.

Amazon has a responsibility to sort this mess out.

Today, I've finally come to the conclusion that this was the most terrible printer buy I've ever had.
Epson's diagnostic software is pure crap. It keeps reporting wrong diagnostics.
As for ink problem, original Epson ink has not solved the problem.
The software 1st connects with the printer, shows a table: a row of 'unknown' for each colour; then shows a graphic to indicate all inks OK, then gets a communication error, then show the same graphic with all empty inks.
And all these take ages & ages to go through the diagnostic & installation procedues.
The diagnostic documentation and support are also terrible!
This printer is not a fit product to come to market.
And I will never touch another Epson product.

My worst kit purchase?

Probably.
Initial indications good.. Neat design, spec full of promises.
First annoyance was the fact that scan to PDF seems to only work via a cable connection. Way to go, for a wireless printer.

However that pales into insignificance when it comes to the cartridges.
After a woefully low number of pages, quality nosedived, even on b/w docs.
Numerous steps followed to resolve, align, blah blah, clean, blah blah, no improvement. In the process slowly realising that those steps eat your ink up at a good rate. Brilliant.

Next is to try a process to be found on the interweb. On the back there is a small panel. Open it and you'll find 2 tubes which are drains. They clog, easily it seems. So I cleaned them out. More cartridges later, I'm getting nowhere.
Final, act of desperation, was to check there was ink in the carts. So yes, I removed each and gave it a gentle shake. Each sounded good. Blue was particularly good.
I now have a blue wall, blue carpet, blue curtains...you get the picture.

I can't wait to take it to the tip, to hear how it sounds as it hits the bottom of a skip. I really want to hurt it.

Very poor instructions!

The first thing that struck me was that although it clearly said Epson SX515W on the box, the manual was for the SX510 and nothing in it even mentioned the SX515W, which I found slightly off-putting! I also found the instructions in the user guide (including the setup guide) very poor indeed.

However, after selecting Quiet Mode in the printer preferences, I did not find the printer noisy at all. In fact, I thought it seemed considerably quieter than my Epson R220. And the print quality was excellent!

BUT for the life of me, I couldn't find anything in the user guide about how to scan a photo using the scanner interface on the computer and have it sent directly to the printer? When using my HP scanjet, one simply has to select "make a copy" from HP's scanning interface and the document is automatically sent directly to the default printer (in my case an Epson R220). So one would imagine that it would be just as easy, if not easier, to accomplish this when the scanner and printer are in the same machine. But no, I can find nothing in the SX515W user manual about how to do this at all! So perhaps you can only scan a document directly to the printer using the buttons on top of the printer on the SX515W and you cannot do so when using the computer interface? I have sent Epson an enquiry asking them to clarify this and will post back when I have received their response.
