Top customer reviews
It is very definitely a running watch rather than a multi sport watch. Although it does offer support for cycling, canoeing, treadmill and other sports it mainly does this by disabling the stride or GPS sensors as appropriate and modifying the algorithm used to calculate calorie consumption. Unlike many rivals in the same price range, there is no heart rate monitor strap included although it should work with any bluetooth 4 monitor including an expensive one offered by Epson themselves.
It is quick to acquire satellites, quicker still when the phone app is used in tandem, and when running should reception be lost then the built in stride sensor takes over to calculate distance. It offers the following selectable measurements which can be displayed during exercise: Distance, Lap Distance, Guide Distance, Pace, Lap Pace, Average pace, Speed, Split Time, Lap Time, Time, Guide Time, Calories burned, Stride, Pitch, Altitude, Cumulative ascent in altitude, Cumulative descent in altitude, Gradient. These can be displayed on up to 4 screen of three parameters each during running and can be changed by tapping the watch face.
One useful function the watch has is target mode. A target pace window is defined and during the run the phone buzzes if the pace goes above or below this window.
After a run the data is exported over bluetooth 4 to the Epson running app on your mobile. The mobile app sends and receives data to the Epson Runsense portal website where the data can be manipulated, displayed and computed but not easily exported to other websites. Sending data wirelessly to the phone is more complicated than with some rival products and is not just a matter of pressing the button on the phone as the app needs to be put into receive mode to take it.
Given that this watch has a stride sensor - basically a type of step counter - and also boasts a long battery life (up 20 days with GPS and HRM off)nit is a pity it does not have general activity monitoring as many of the latest rival sports watches such as the Polar V800 GPS Sports Watch with Heart Rate Monitor do. Again, given that it supports bluetooth 4 it also a pity it does not display system and app alerts from the watch as some rivals now do.
This is a good, fairly well specified, middle of the range running watch comparable to the Garmin Forerunner 220 GPS Running Watch with Colour Display and Heart Rate Monitor - Black/Red or Polar RC3 GPS Heart Rate Monitor and Sports Watch. It is designed for serious runners looking for a reliable and accurate running aid. It falls down due to the absence of an HRM, having fewer features than some rivals, lack of export facility from the portal website. There are many other better specified sports GPS watches available in this price range including those more established names in this field and that make it hard to recommend this watch over them.

The following day it just let itself down completely. I went for a 5km run which took a little over 26 minutes, only to find I needed the quick start guide to know how to stop the watch recording! No amount of pressing any combination of buttons helped! Eventually the screen went blank as I had turned it off. Turning it back on again is ONLY possible if you return it to it's charging cradle, not helpful if you are trying to save battery power between runs when away from home and your computer.
Finally, the watch really let itself down when it displayed 70% battery life! Meaning a full battery wouldn't even last for a half marathon never mind a full one.
The watch is being returned as I type. The seller hasn't provided much information either with regards to their returns/refund policy so far they have assumed I am fully aware of all the details and you know what they say about those who assume!
Epson also claim to have a full user manual online...well good luck trying to get that to 'run' on your computer. I can tell you now that 'Windows 10' won't run it.
Just a final word; Double check who the courier is as there are those who are diabolical (Don't know if I allowed to mention the company name...but it's the Messenger of the Greek Gods!)
Clearly this watch is designed for much more sophisticated users than me. It can measure lap times, numbers of strides per distance, average pace, etc, though this model does not measure heart rate. It can be linked to software you can download from the manufacturer's website. However, all users may be interested in basic performance when still - particularly if accuracy is important to you.
