Very good with pigment inks
on 17 February 2011
Potential purchasers browsing Epson papers should note that this "Archival" matte paper is recommended for pigment ink printers. Owners of dye based ink printers should buy the ordinary heavyweight matte paper.
I suspect that some people thinking about trying this matte paper for the first time may be deterred by the fact that it is sold only in size A4 and larger and is sold in packs of 50. My advice is to give it a go if you print at A4. It is less than half the price of premium glossy, though that is not the reason for choosing it. It does not produce the vibrant colours of glossy paper - or as much contrast - but in some circumstances that is a distinct advantage, particularly in landscapes and in any photo where you are seeking a "soft" look. It is also the obvious choice if you want to use photo paper where light reflections are an issue. Finally, I think it is the best medium for black and white photos if your printer handles monochrome well.
It will never replace glossy and semi-gloss paper but if used appropriately it gives excellent and inexpensive results.
