You will find O'Brien's to be one of the very best commentaries on Philippians, but you will get more out of it if you are familiar with New Testament Greek. The author writes from a theologically conservative viewpoint, but is always prepared to evaluate other views, while also clearly articulating his own.
The long section on Philippians 2:5-11 has been painstakingly researched. It is thorough and magnificent.
If you read commentaries to help you to understand the text, so that you can better serve Jesus Christ, you will really appreciate this one, as well as the author's commentaries on Colossians and Ephesians.
Highly recommended.

This is a thorough and excellent commentary for the technically (in this discipline) literate. Background is explored and weighted conclusions drawn while different outcomes are not dismissed. There is a proper concentration on the text, as the series requires. Having read the commentary a fuller and better understanding of the letter is surely gained.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic addition to my library! 18 Aug. 2016

Fantastic exegetical work! I have been teaching a Bible study through the book of Philippians. This has been a primary material, and it does a great job of mustering the opinions of others and then expressing the author's own opinion. O'Brien is clear and helpful. I have not yet found a text that was not covered satisfactorily. This work has really helped my understanding of the book of Philippians and has also helped my self-taught Greek to improve.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great technical commentary 17 Dec. 2013

This is probably one of the most strong technical commentaries on Philippians I've found. Helps to know greek in your use of it. Not crucial but some observations O'Brien makes probably wouldn't make sense if you don't have any greek. Only found a couple observations of O'Brien that I disagree with so far and I'm about halfway through the book. Overall very very helpful resource and strongly encourage anyone going through Philippians to have this one on your shelf.

I enjoy the depth of O'Brien he covers all angles even when I do not agree with his stance he gives great insight to differing views from his own. I have about 15 commentaries on Philippians I would rank this one in the top 3.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Scholarly work 29 Mar. 2013

This commentary is what I hoped it would be, a very thorough survey of current scholarship, and a thoughtful look at the book of Philippians.
