Without delving too much into the plot, this is a bit like a BSG/Star-Trek Voyager mash-up with some Alistair Reynolds thrown in.
There are some interesting ideas but some coincidences required to make the plot work are far-fetched indeed once you think about them.
The idea of a space-craft approaching at 0.5C and blowing up, showering the Aurora with debris is entertaining, but don't think too hard about the energies involved otherwise it'll spoil the story.

Having recently got a kindle, it has opened an avenue to authors that I would probably have never heard of or read. This book has had me glued to it since I got it. Being interested in Sci-Fi genre this ticked all the boxes for me, and although if follows a similar type of pattern as in some other books I have read (young inexperienced crew fighting against insurmountable odds etc) it is written in a way that gets you engaged with the characters, even if you can predict what will probably happen. Looking forward to the next book in the series, and will definitely buy if anywhere as good as this one.

I found the first 25% of the book to be a tad slow and wasn't overly impressed by the lead character. The dialogue was good but not great. The plot line however was solid and I found myself getting hooked.

All in all, I've rated it 3 stars, if the beginning had been as good as when he got into his stride later on in the book then I would have given it a 4. I WILL be reading the sequel as soon as I finish this review.

Pro's - Interesting supporting cast, solid plot, enjoyable and well managed battle scenes.
Con's - Slow start, lead character is annoying, ending needed more drama.

Well...at a cheap price and a couple of promising reviews I thought I'd give this a try. All in all, not a bad effort for a first book (?) but I'm left with a few thoughts. The characters are somewhat two dimensional. I'm not sure what turns the lead from a drunken arrogant son into a together, motivated pilot over night, and why is Cameron such a cow? She'd have been kicked out a long time ago for not being a team player. Anyhow, all forgivable.

My biggest gripe is that it feels like a Prologue rather than a story in its own right. I realise it sets you up for more books, but I'm left feeling like the scene's been set for a story which just ends.

But, it can't have been all bad because I read it over two nights and I've just bought the second, if not just to see what happens next. Is it going to be just another Star Trek Voyager...or something else? (Hint, hint Ryk Brown!)

I wish the author all the best, but suggest he reads some Alastair Reynolds for how well space and characters can be done.

I was really pleased to find this series extremely readable. The writing is good, the plot moves along at a cracking pace, and you do feel something for the characters.

Perhaps what makes this series stand out is that both the good guys and the bad guys are human. We don't have to have the whole alien species thing, although "human" in this case does encompass a pretty broad spectrum.

You do need to read them in sequence, but as someone else says, at this price, they are pretty good value for money. It might also be helpful for new readers to have a bit of an intro that can be skipped to recap the plot. I read the first four one after another so not an issue, but by the time 5,6 and 7 come out there might be a bit of a pause.

I wish for them to be a tad longer because I read fast, but am sure that most readers who like space opera will find them very satisfying and a great holiday read. Keep em coming!!!!

This novel appears to be riffing off the whole Star Trek Voyager lost in space theme. The premise of the plot isn't too bad but the characterisation and dialogue leave an awful lot to be desired. Not a whole lot of originality here.

I read a lot of books of the genre science fiction and so its easy to develop a demanding expectation in terms of reading material. I am quick to criticise when a book doesn't deliver but, this book delivered a fast flowing drama which held me throughout from start to finish, in fact I am really annoyed that the author hasn't finished the next installment yet. Highly recommend you pick this up and get settled in for a fast-paced, action-packed read that will keep you interested right to the last page.

So, where is Book two?
