Environmental Alarmist: A Political Satire Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

If you are bothered by greenwashing, baffled by eco-denialism, and bewildered by our seemingly inexorable march toward global environmental catastrophe, this book is for you. In a not-so-distant future, in a world ravaged by climate change and invasive pests, humanity still chooses self-deception over sacrifice. Even the ubiquitous green flies buzzing around our heads don’t concentrate our minds on what humanity’s survival requires. When a sly US Senator and a jaded propagandist concoct a longshot and cynically opportunistic “environmentalist” campaign for the Presidency, it looks like just more of the old, phony politics. But then things start to get real. And hilarious. And hopeful. Because the politician and the propagandist start to care about the planet. As they begin telling voters the truth, they also stop lying to themselves. If you remain hopeful that maybe it’s not too late, that against the odds humanity might still get it together and face reality – and especially if you haven’t lost your sense of humor -- you will love The Environmental Alarmist.

Product description

Review

"A hilarious satire about an unlikely environmentalist presidential campaign. If you have never worked in politics, you will find The Environmental Alarmist funny because it is too outrageous to be true. If you HAVE worked in politics, you will laugh yourself silly because you know it isn't."--Bill Richardson, Former New Mexico Governor, US Ambassador to the UN, US Commerce Secretary and presidential candidate

"Invasive green flies infesting the White House? GMO experiments unleashing a plague of genetically modified pigs that reproduce like rabbits? A wiseass environmentalist candidate and his motley campaign crew coming to the rescue to save the world? Who says there's nothing funny about environmental collapse?" --Paul Begala, CNN political commentator and former chief political strategist for Bill Clinton and Al Gore

5.0 out of 5 stars The West Wing for the 2020s

Marco Vannicelli is a political antihero--he is at the same time cynical and idealistic, and also fragile in his personal life, just like Toby Ziegler in the West Wing. In addition, he is supremely funny. Reading this book will help you prepare (and brace yourself) for the upcoming election campaign.

Excellent book: well written, insightful, funny, and prophetic. Can't wait to read the next book by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is what satire should always be!

I couldn't help but burst out laughing througout the book. Some of my favorite newly minted word finds included: Neo-Malpensians, Neo-Marsupials, and FAO pas. The rapid-fire exchanges of the characters cracked me up countless times. For example, the stab at academic pomp when, in Chapter 17, the protagonist, Marco Vanicelli responded to the "Missing Link" who had hurled an insult at him that "[w]hat I mean is, your sentence structure suggests a limited familiarity with the semiotics or linguistic construction" and the following exchange made me almost pee in my pants. In addition to the hilarious dialogue between the odd-ball characters delivered with crystalline clarity and sharpness that makes the political campaign fly by, the interwoven storyline about people deceiving themselves, and others, and finally finding courage to face up to at least some of the deception is heartwarming. I cannot wait to get my hands on the author's other books - the title "Phake News" sounds like another hoot to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars fun ride

Easy reading book. It’s a parody, however it’s probably more closer to the true nature of politics than we want to believe. Loved how it keeps you interested in the drama. Fun story, flows very well making it easy to keep up with the fast pace evolving story. It was hard to put down. I could see a play or short film being made based off this book. I would entreat people to check it out, you won’t be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty Satire with a Purpose

If you liked Veep's Selina Meyer, you will love Senator/President Dick Hernandez and his quirky entourage. Politicos, lovers of Italian culture, and academics alike will be entertained by the book’s main character and engaging storyteller Marco Vannicelli, a disillusioned ex-professor turned political consultant who is tapped to lead Hernandez’s insurgent presidential campaign. And of course all this is set in a world rocked by the consequences of climate change. There's much to like about this funny and insightful novel.
