5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for the right reader 12 Mar. 2017

I love this book. To be honest, I've never cooked from it, and the recipes are considerably less clear and precise than the recipes you'd find in a professionally produced cookbook today (though in fairness, a decent cook should be able to parse his/her way through them and come up with something nice to eat). What's fascinating, though, are the glimpses of lives provided by the essays written by the book's (clearly well-heeled and often titled) contributors, from the incredibly elaborate lunches ("I admit, it is nice to have help") to the woman -- my favorite, actually -- whose grandfather lived to 94, a fact he attributed in part to his habit of eating raw onions when he went out shooting, which he did quite a lot. People who regard cookbooks exlusively as how-to manuals will probably find this disappointing. But readers who are interested in food, in its history, in its intersection with people's lives, in its role in social life....will find it absolute catnip
