Philip Tucker invites us into a world of secrecy, and one the reader feels he knows. A world where the work is of paramount importance, but where personal ambition and personal traits override the need to efficiently acquire and share intelligence on terrorist activities. In my view, the writing has a clear stamp of reality all over it, and is styled in a way that is reminiscent of Graham Greene, one of the greatest British authors who ever lived. Need I say more?

I was recommended to read this book by a family friend.
I found it to be very interesting and quite well written.
The subject matter is dealt with in a somewhat unusual way but it did not spoil the overall pleasure in reading it.
I tried, without success, to try to find any other works from this author which leaves me to believe it is his first published book. If so it is a really good effort for a first off, and I look forward to reading his next one.

If you're looking for lots of bangs and bullets then this is not for you. This is a thoughtful well written piece that avoids the normal clichés of the genre and gives the reader something completely different to think about. For a first novel this is so well done and clearly the author has real understanding of his subject. He has given us the classic slow burner and really hope there is more to come.

This is indeed a first class read. The eloquently descriptive account of the places, characters and events unfolds slowly yet tantalisingly so that the reader feels the need to push on through the pages to try and get to the real terror that haunts this Englishman. The story produces many philosophical dilemmas and, indeed, there were many occasions when I felt a sincere degree of empathy with the Englishman as he encountered his various predicaments, real and imagined!

Anyone expecting to read a predictable, formulaic, testosterone-fuelled, thriller will be disappointed. This is a refreshingly, thoughtful and intelligent book, clearly written by someone with hands-on experience and a thorough knowledge of the real world of anti-terrorist operations and police work. There are no Hollywood heroics here, just an insight into how genuine, hard-working professionals obliged to deal with all kinds of horrors, can be brought to the edge of a mental breakdown and even suicide, by the incompetence, mismanagement, cowardice and even petty jealousy of their so-called superiors. This Englishman's real terror is the fear of failure and shame, but most importantly of letting his family down.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was one of those 'can't put it down' books. Philip's style of writing is brilliant and the way he describes things is magic. Thank you Philip; I am looking forward to the next novel.
