Product Description

""Katamba brings words to life. So relaxed is his style that English Words often reads like a leisurely chat with an old friend. But don't be fooled...the data is used expertly to introduce a wide range of lexical issues and to provide deceptively sophisticated insights into morphology, semantics and phonology."
-Steven Jones, University of Manchester, UK
"Anyone who has an interest in the systematic study of words will find this book entertaining and serious at the same time. In an age of the World Wide Web and mobile technologies, this revised edition rightly addresses the impact on the lexicon from electronic-mediated communication. The student of language will find the challenging exercises, the hyperlinks and the various well-chosen examples particularly stimulating for understanding the nature of language."
-Vincent Ooi, National University of Singapore

An interesting and educational book, which has been extremely useful for my degree and for a deeper understanding of the English lexical system

HASH(0x89082738) out of 5 stars Really Not a Good Book 13 Feb. 2016
By Amazon Customer - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
It is really not a good book.
The author uses a lot of professional word, but don't explain immediately when new hard words appear instead put them at the end of the book. Although he uses a lot of professional words, this book do not play in a professional way; he write his spoken English down, hence his utterance has several grammatical problem.
My priority of reading this book is to explicit English words' lexicology and etymology, but only its name is appropriate to my purpose. In fact, it introduces compound words and grammar first that I find nothing helpful for me. Maybe it may have a trivial to someone who haven't heard lexicology and etymology before, though I just scan several books contents of getting this idea.
Moreover, its examples is not precise enough and I can hardly figure out the meaning in pictures writer want to convey. Its exercises don't have answers, so the author don't give a chance to me to understand what he said.
