At face falue The English Roses seems very much a simple kids' book but being a massive Madonna fan i was intruiged to find out what her books were like and upon reading this i was startled and pleasantly surprised to see there in in fact an immense deal of depth and maturity to be found when you read further into the book. To start, it needs to be said, the book itself is simply gorgeous, well made in a durable hard-cover format and tied up with a pink silk bow. The fonts and illustrations are wonderful and perfectly set the tone of the whole book - one of sugar, sweetness and happiness.
For those who don't know, the English Roses are 5 girls (Binah, Grace, Amy, Charlotte & Nicole) who are totally best friends forever - with different personalities and outlooks on life there's something here for everybody to empathise with and the book also offers a telling look into Madonna's own personality. There's also quite a few 'wink, wink... nudge, nudge' moments too as only Madonna knows best. Think back to Madonna's song 'Where Life Begins' and you'll know where i'm coming from. Don't worry though, it's all pretty subtle and good natured. The Book takes the form of a kind of journal, the English Roses filling in questionnaire style entries for themselves with each girl having about 14 pages.
Although the entries are only short, Madonna's writing is of a high standard and manages to capture that difficult middle ground between youthful accessability and fun randomness and the afore mentioned more mature side, painting real characters that are memorable and not afraid to speak their minds. There's also room in the book for you to enter your own info and see which English Rose you are most like (for your info, i was Amy).Read more ›
