4.0 out of 5 stars Some gems from a wide period of music 9 Jun. 2013
By Tero - Published on Amazon.com

When I think of the baroque, it is Handel and Purcell that first come to mind. Purcell is here, Handel pretty much omitted, but then this is quite far from Handel, mostly earlier music.

Discs and some short notes:
His Majesty's Harper: The music is mostly lute music arranged or played on a harp. A nice disc for back ground, but not much more. The harpist has better discs recorded.

Delight and Disorder: Recorder and harpsichord duets. A couple of delightful tunes I had not heard elsewhere. A 5 minute recorder solo piece from Dublin is delightful

Purcell disc: Tenor, harpsichord and strings. Quite delightful. If you are a Purcell fan, you probably have these. Insterspersed with 2-5 minute instrumental pieces, I think on viols.

Venus and Adonis/Cupid and Death (spreads to two discs): Theater music ("masque")of the times. Rooley and Co. do a good job. It is not Shakespeare, but short spoken parts in the Cupid work (Gibbons/Locke). I think I would enjoy the Cupid and Death on stage, but nothing here stuck to my memory.

Musica Britannica: The Deller consort and others do consort music. Songs and instrumentals. Well planned program. There is no plot to follow so you can play the whole disc and be entertained. Or saddened (there is some Dowland)

Shakespeare Songs: Deller consort again. Male singers accompanied by lute only. You can search outside this box if the disc is available, but if the Shakespeare era is your thing, this is a worthy disc.

Musik Der Tudor Zeit: Anon, Taverner, Sheppard. Church choral music in Latin.

Two harpsichord/virginal discs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff! 7 April 2013

I enjoyed the variety of old baroque vocals and music. It's nice to have a collection of this type. I don't believe there are many compliations like this for this type of music.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice sampling. 14 Feb. 2013

This is a good collection of some interesting selections among the English repertoire. I received the set as a gift.

There are three harpsicord discs (one with recorder), as well as a disc with harp arrangements. If you get bored by harpsichord or harp music, 40% of the box might direct you elsewhere. They are well performed and recorded, though they range from the 60's through the 00's. The Leonhardt is the oldest, but probably the best performance of the genre in the set and it still sounds good. I didn't enjoy the Andreas Staier disc as much as I hoped to.

You will also find an appropriate representation of Purcell in the set. All are excellently done, with great vocal solos. There are a few repeated works, but the instrumentation is varied enough that I enjoyed hearing the works arranged more sparcely than usual. No inclusion of any Fantasias for viola da gamba, though.

The standouts for me were the vocal/choral discs. Initially the theatrical works Venis and Adonis/Cupid and death annoyed me by the speaking parts, but after listening to them as intended (a drama), I found them very enjoyable. The music is first rate, and Emma Kirkby is fabulous as always. The Shakespeare themed disk was good, and I liked the Tudor period music even better.

The set is a good way to familiarize yourself with some great music. I would have liked to see an instumental disc (maybe a chamber music group on original instruments) in place of one of the harpsichord discs. Other than that I recommend this set. Make a nice cup of English Breakfast Tea and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag at a great price 16 May 2012
By Ken Braithwaite - Published on Amazon.com

A slightly mixed bag, but with some great stuff in it. A bit too much hey-nonny-nonny stuff but for the price it's well worth getting. Some wonderful keyboard and harp stuff especially.
