Review

"Pudding fanciers need to arm themselves with a collection of recipes... Best of the lot is Mary Norwak's glorious little book English Puddings." Nigel Slater --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Mary Norwak has been a food writer for many years, and has written more than 100 cookery books as well as one on kitchen antiques. She has contributed to many national newspapers and magazines including The Times, The Guardian, Good Housekeeping and House and Garden. She was cookery editor of the Daily Express, and of Farmer's Weekly, and on the latter began to develop her great interest in regional and traditional food, and in the social history of cooking and eating. Previous best-sellers include The Farmhouse Kitchen, The Lark Rise Recipe Book, British Cakes and A-Z of Home Freezing. When not cooking or writing, she gardens, collects old cookery books and haunts junk shops. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Format: Paperback
For me this book has just the right balance between historical background, and practical recipes I can imagine using now. As well as good versions of the standards (Eve's pudding, bread and butter, etc) there are also those that I had heard of but not seen elsewhere - flummeries, milk puddings, and syllabubs, and also good coverage of savoury recipes. The tone of the writing has character without being hectoring.

This is a lovely book for anyone who loves traditional English deserts. I am Dutch and live in Pembrokeshire and every time I make a recipe from this book for my dinner guests (Dutch, Welsh, English, Scots and Canadian!) they absolutely love it! A must for your kitchen library.

I have had this book since the eighties and use it regularly for good reliable recipes. Only just found out it was reprinted, not surprised.
