Product Description

From the Back Cover

Most books on the Norman conquest concentrate on the conquerors, the Norman settlers who become the ancestors of the medieval English baronage. This book is different, setting out to examine the experience of the lesser English lords and landowners, which has been largely ignored. Ann Williams shows how they survived the conquest and settlement, adapted to foreign customs, and in the process preserved native tradition and culture.

The research and style is sound. My problem is that the print of this book is so incredibly small. Seepage of ink into the paper also distorts the text. I am afraid this style of print is becoming the norm. Even with specs this print defeats me.

Thoroughly enjoyed this and read it at a gallop. In places it is rather dense in its dissection of the evidence, but it is a fascinating subject and the accessible style carries it through. I have always tended to regard the Norman era as black box, or rather a chrysalis, into which the Anglo-Saxon era went and from which the High Middle Ages emerged, but Williams does a lot to make sense of the process.

This publication is not as comprehensive as I had hoped for. Yes it delves into many of the Saxon families prior to 1066 but unfortunately not enough to assist me in my research. A good book of its type though.

My daughter asked me to get her 2 books from Amazon on medieval history. This what she is studying this topic at university. These books would have been hard to find quickly, so many thanks to Amazon for having a supply. Both books are essential for anyone who is reading that period of history.
