I hesitated before buying Volume 3 of "The English Hymn". Would I really want to listen to a whistle-stop tour of hymns from Advent to All Saints? I need not have worried, for the Wells Cathedral Choir have pulled off a great success with this compilation. They engage the listener from the first track to the last. The diction of the choir is first-class, with the organ accompaniments never overpowering. There are a few surprises on the way, such as Malcolm Archer's arrangement of "Winchester New" for "On Jordan's bank",and less familiar tunes for "Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost", "For the Beauty of the Earth" and "For all the Saints". I particularly enjoyed the two Epiphany hymns: "Brightest and Best of the sons of the morning" to the tune "Epiphany Hymn" and "From the Eastern mountains" to W.H.Ferguson's "Cuddesdon". The accompanying booklet gives all the texts of the hymns and some interesting notes on the hymns and their tunes by Alan Luff. According to the booklet, there were 22 Boy Choristers and 23 Girl Choristers who contributed to this recording. They can be very proud of their achievements, (though I have to say they sound like they were all boys to my ear!) This is a another warmly-recommended CD in this series from Malcolm Archer and the Wells Cathedral Choir.

Malcolm Archer does not let us down with this third edition the the 'English Hymn' series. The organ and arrangements are very similar to those in 'Jerusalem the Golden' and 'Lead, Kindly Light' - the 2nd and 5th CDs respectively. I find his arrangements (especially in the passiontide hymns) delightful, with occasional verses sungs by lower parts (men) only - a surprisingly effective idea. The Choir is splendid - well balanced, precise and sensetive, and enunciation is as good as it gets! Rupert Gough really shows us what Wells Cathedral Organ can do in this album, with a remarkable range of playing - from the penitential and thoughtful 'Lord Jesus, Think on Me' and 'When I survey the Wonderous Cross' to the wild, loud and flamboyant festive favourites 'Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem' and 'Hail the Day that Sees Him Rise'. This is money well spent for any lover of the Anglican hymn tradition.

HASH(0x8db76f9c) out of 5 stars Most exquisite collection of English hymns I have yet heard. 5 Feb. 2014
By peter cates - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The CD merits 5 stars because it is that good. Each hymn repays close listening, especially with the booklet at hand, but my favorite
of all is Vaughan Williams' arrangement of "It is a thing most wonderful" which I have played dozens of times. The Wells ensemble
combines the voices of both boys and girls with adult men for a well-honed blend particularly when in a capella mode while the
church acoustic and ambient recorded sound round out an inspiring CD well worth owning by connoisseurs of English choirs and
beautiful old hymns.
